I don't think anyone is questioning the older versions of Tourance Tyres Matt, just be careful if it is the "Tourance Next" that is going on.

I think it just said 'tourance' on the side when he showed it to me... I'll double check when I pick it up though. The mechanic said they were the best tyres, and why would he lie??? ;-)

Changed my mind again... I'll take the train later instead :)

Phoned him up and asked him to put on Anakee 3s front and rear (he reckons I'll only get another 1k out of the front TW anyway apparently). I know that's an unproven tyre too, but seeing as I do 99.99999% of my riding on road (the 0.00001% accounts for the occasional Sat Nav error) they look like they'll be a decent choice hopefully!

Just to clear up confusion: lots of people swear by the old Tourance, but a lot have had trouble with the old Tourance front tyre. Seems a huge amount of people have problems with the new Tourance Next tyre, also more front than rear.

I'd leave it on, order what you want from http://www.oponeo.co.uk (or http://www.blackcircles.com or wherever you like) and take the bike back to have tyres fitted that you are happy with (rather than taking chances with what they have.) If it's a real emergency I'd put an old Tourance rear on, but only in that scenario (and never a front.)

Edit: If the independent is nice enough they might even be happy for you to deliver the tyres straight to them. If they are reluctant I'd point out that they can be sure you're coming back to them for fitting rather than taking it elsewhere. Saves you the hassle of taking them there on the bike.

It's OK, what's done is done now... He said he had already fitted the Tourance, but he'd swap it again for Anakees if I ordered the tyres through them, so I agreed. Their pricing has always been fair when I've used them for other things, so hopefully it won't be too bad.

Anyway, it's done now :) Anakee 3s front and rear, bike available for collection tomorrow. Will let you all know how I get on with the Anakee 3s on the tyre forum.

Well I got me goods from M & P today, well done to them, ordered 10.30pm Monday evening and delivered today at lunch.

So this evening I set about the 7.5k service. Decided to change the oil filter as well as the oil. Tank off and checked air filter and it was fine, checked the plugs and they are iridium plugs, found nothing wrong with them so decided to leave them in and use the ones I have at the 14.5k service.  Checked and inspected everything else and a walk around with the torque wrench, nothin loose. Fecking good machine these Suzuki's  :old: apart from the service intervals  lol

So your mechanic was right I suppose Matt   :thumb:

Good machines, oh yes. Service intervals are designed for the dealer, not the owner. I'll be doing 5k services once the warranty is out.

Me too! :)

In fact, I might switch before the warranty is out... maybe after the 14500 service.

I don't intend to get to the valve clearance service within the warranty period, 3 years. I'll be right on it as the warranty runs out, then I'll do it myself.

Meantime I'll be doing 4k ones because they're easier to remember. So, 4,8,12 and then the valves at 16 ensuring that it doesn't go over 14,500 before that warranty expires.

I do 8k services on my zx6, it requires 4k ones (valves at 8k(so I do 8 then valves at 16)). It's been fine. I have a mate who has the same bike, he performs 10k services, valves at 20k. It's on nearly 60,000 miles now and the last time he did the valves (at 54k) all was well. Modern oils make this possible, dealers need to catch up.

As has been said many a time... it is a complete con :)  I fail to believe that the Triumph Explorer can survive 10,000 mile service intervals, but my Glee will blow up if I leave it 3,501. Even if there is more oil in the Triumph engine, it's still crazy.

To be fair though, I am having the 7,500 mile service done at 8,350 miles so I'm not exactly following the intervals exactly myself!

Haha, no, no you are not, good man. :)

I bet they give you some grief for that, and I thought I was brave going to 4184.
I was on 3684 and had a day out in Wales planned for last Sunday. I'm not going to take the Strom because it'll send it over? Why do they think we buy bikes?

Mine is serviced by an independent, so I avoid grief due to them being as skeptical as I am :)  When I took it in earlier the conversation went like this...

Mechanic - "It's just oil and filter isn't it?"

Me - "Well... according to the book....."

Mechanic - "oh yeah, I know... replace engine after 2000 miles right?"

To be honest, at this point I'm gradually becoming less bothered about the warranty (he says, jinxing himself into impending warranty issues) and more just being able to show I've looked after it if I want to sell. Getting the oil and filter changed regularly is something a buyer would want to see, but I doubt they'd care that I waited a little longer to change perfectly good spark plugs!

Don't sell it, just fix it up again when it gets to about 100k

I've been thinking about doing the servicing myself and videoing the operation, complete with reg number, getting in the mileage etc. A potential buyer can not only see that it's been done but, better than a rubber stamp, can actually watch me do it. Stick the vids on YouTube come sale time and they can watch each service for themselves. The bike would sell with the original vids on disc too as part of the service history.

That is a good idea! Yeah, I've also been thinking about doing the oil/filter change services myself. I'm still new enough to bikes that I'm of a "I couldn't possibly do anything mechanical myself!" mentality. But I saw a video the other day and it really doesn't look that hard... Level ground, drain old oil, replace filter, pour new oil in, jobs a good'one right?

Simple enough, but do not ever accidentally start the engine without having put the new oil, it's easier done than you might think if you do not have a routine.

I did it myself with an old bike when I was doing a lot of work on it and I started all the other work while the oil was draining, and forgot I hadn't put the fresh oil in. The result was blown big end bearings.

Now I use a zip tie to tie the keys to the oil container and only remove the keys from the oil container when the new oil is in.

The first few times I put the kill switch on before I undo the sump plug. If I then tried to start the bike is says CHECK and I'll remember if I haven't put the oil in. I stopped doing it on the Strom, but started doing it again after I bought the DR-Z. The DR-Z has two oil drain plugs, one in the frame reservoir and one in the 'dry' sump. The kill switch is to remind me that I should have both plugs and the oil in before starting the bike.

I must admit, I've never done that. The big tray of oil under the bike, complete with draining filter, reminds me I've just drained the oil. I don't get distracted when servicing bikes, I tend to stick with the task at hand. Draining the oil is cup of tea time only.

After reading the above comments I think I'll stick to my routine if starting it up dry is so easily done.

Technically the ECU should see the oil pressure is low and cut the engine.

No ECU on an old carb driven GSX550 :)

The problem was I wanted to check the exhaust gaskets were not leaking after doing some work on the exhaust. It is only the sort of mistake you will ever make once.
