K3 or K4 ???
« on: July 11, 2013, 15:27:40 »
Hi - I've a 2004 (04 plate) Vee. Its got the later seat and adjustable front suspension but has the older fixed screen (transition model I assume).

I want to upgrade the suspension but I'm not sure what to order, I assume as its adjustable I should order as a 2004 onwards  model ?

Also what's the standard fork oil grade and air gap - Thanks.

With a fixed screen, it can't be later than a K3. Look at the tenth digit on the VIN. It should match the model year for a K series. Anyhow, there is no difference in suspension components between K3 and K4. 10wt is commonly used but fork oil viscosity is a strange number. Different brands vary in the actual effect though they are marked at the same weight. I'll let people experienced in local products answer that. 133mm of air space above the oil with no spring and the tube all the way down is the spec for a DL1000.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

Silkolene do a good fully synthetic 10w fork oil called Pro RSF. Get it from Opie Oils, we get forum discount from them.

Not sure exactly how much you will need, on the Wee I just just make it with 1 litre, but on the Vee you might need a bit more than a litre.

I've also used the Shell fork oil (what I currently have in my forks) and I can't tell the difference between the two so their 10W is a pretty close match to Silkolene's 10W (in terms of feel.)

Opie Oils also sell Motul and Castrol, both good brands too, but I haven't used either of their fork oils yet.
