Help! I need someone with (access to) a lathe!
« on: June 28, 2013, 21:32:44 »
Picked up my crankcase from the welders today, and as expected the bearings now need replacing. The 'normal' bearings I can do fine, but the crankshaft journal bearings require a special tool... The Suzuki option is to bend over and invite the dealer over for a shafting, but the tool doesn't look too difficult to produce... if I had a lathe.

Basically need something in steel turning to high accuracy. Anyone up for the job?

I would volunteer but I'm not sure my aged Granville (or its operator) is up to "high accuracy" - plus it works in thou not mm.....

If within a couple of thou is near enough let me know (although I'm now away for a few days).

How about giving Cymarc a call? You know he does quality work so he might be able to help you out?

You don't have to buy or make the tool, take the parts to them and ask them to replace the bearings that way you just pay half an hour labour.
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

I have more tools than my local dealers :haha: (got to laugh, it'd be worrying otherwise...)

Iansoady, thanks for the offer :) The critical diameter is 46.006 – 46.012 mm (1.8113 – 1.8115 in)... I'd need a shortish length of steel turned down to that (OD), length not too critical, so long as the machined part is longer than 1". I'd also need a ring (~1/2" thickness) with that as an ID too... what do you reckon? (I'll do some drawings in a bit haha)

I'll give Cymarc a shout too, thanks for the reminder Juv :)

Tolerances those tight would need grinding rather than turning surely? Are you certain they are correct?

:shy: erm, I may have used imperial tolerances instead of metric there...

I got a 'no' from Cymarc, I'll give sharealike a poke too.

Here's a crappy sketch with (corrected) mm dimensions.

I'd ask you to keep inside the lines, but it might look better completely coloured over lol

I had a look through the manual and removing and replacing those crankshaft journal bearings is going to be a PITA, even with the right tools.

I wonder how much it would have been to get an engine with a knackered top end.

Still, we are all enjoying the pics and the heroic goings on down by the pond... :thumb:

there's an '06 SV650 for sale in Rye, Cat D, fully working order, £440 so far with 10 hrs to go....

Its item 261236776141 the whole bottom end would be the same except perhaps some of the gear ratios....strip off the heads, put yours on and bobs a relative. The rest of the bike can be parted out cheap to make back the bulk of the cost to purchase....

Hi,

Back now.

I could probably do the stepped cylinder (although I wouldn't be confident about the tolerances - 0.1mm is .004" and may be on the limits of my (and the lathe's) abilities.....

It also depends whether the shoulder needs to be sharp right angle,  undercut or radiused.

I assume it's just mild steel.

WRT the clamp part I don't think I could do that as that hole and countersink for the clamping screw are tricky. The cut is also a bit problematic.

Never need complicated things like this for my Matchless.

Let me know if you want me to have a go at the cylinder and what the exact specs are.......

Hi All,

I managed to find a machine shop to play with, so thanks for your offer Iansoady, but I don't need you now :)

I was considering the sv cams... but the dl's plenty good for me :)
