DL650 Brakes / Callipers
« on: June 17, 2013, 10:11:09 »
Hi all..

After a 6 month period of hammering my bike through some savage conditions the brakes are finally feeling the effects.

I've removed both fron callipers as some of the pistons have seized, my question is, does anyone know of any reputable places for new piston seals?

I've spoken with my main dealer and they are £35.90 for both sides, but thought I would shop around, eBay obviously has some but I'm a little reluctant to buy from someone I know nothing about.

Cheer all

Pete

Wemoto or ask your dealer for hi level ones. They come in a pack of 5 of each seal. So you'll have a set free. And for the rear you need one of each seal but you'll get 4 spare sets. Cost me about £25 to do all the seals a few weeks ago.
The callipers are straight off the sv also

Same as the 650 Versys and the new GSR750, along with many other mid range Jap bikes, very common caliper.

I think I have a set of pistons and seals for the front calipers for your bike. Let me dig them out tonight and I'll let you know if they're complete. :)

They are the same as the SV650, front and rear. I usually just buy some cheap SV seals off eBay, never had any issues. Works out very cheap this way. You could also just measure your pistons and buy the right sized seals. I can't remember what the the measurements are off the top of my head, I get confused because I have another bike and I use CBR600 calipers on my Wee.

Thanks Juvecu

Had an email from http://www.wemoto.com/ last night and then found the SV650 seals. Will be handy for the future. Cheers.

If you need the piston kits, I have two for a AK7 onwards Wee (not sure about the Glee). Each kit contains 2 pistons, 2 oil seals and 2 dust seals.

You can have both for £30 posted to a UK address by Royal Mail :)

Hello everyone

Thank mjc506, I've unearthed another issue so might be looking at new callipers?

I've managed to remove the pistons from both the front callipers and remove the old seals, while they are off I'm thinking of replacing all the parts I can.

One thing I am unsure its the caliper carrier and associated pistons. I assume the are pistons as there are boots and grease.

See images on this site page: http://www.cheapcycleparts.com/oem-part ... 50ak8-sak8

You can see the individual parts.

My questions is, how the hell does the carrier come off and if it does should I bother, the reason I am tempted to remove it is I assume the carrier should move back and forth on the upper and lower pistons but it does not.

Thanks in advanced

Here's the front caliper for all to see. What parts are you trying to take apart? The part with TOKICO cast on it is a single casting.

I think he's talking about getting number 7 removed.

They are just sliding pins and pull out. Spray in some WD40, leave it a bit, wiggle it a bit and they should come out. Clean them out well, make sure there's no corrosion on the sliding pins and grease them well before putting it back together. Use a rubber safe grease, search eBay for "red rubber grease" if you don't have any.

Morning blokes..

Number 7 is right, its just seems SOLID in the caliper, I'll give it a soak and hopefully I can get them apart.

Thanks again!!!

I don't think you need rubber grease for that as there's no contact with the hydraulic system. I've always used a thin smear of HMP lithium grease (NOT copaslip) and that seems to do the trick.

If the carrier is solid in the caliper as you mention then the usual cause of this is corrosion of the main caliper body where the rubber boot (item 6) passes through it. In my experience of these calipers, this is more often the problem with seized brakes than sticky pistons.

You need to get it apart, pull the rubber out and use some wet-and-dry paper to clean all the white furry corrosion out of the caliper body before re-assembling. Grease not only the pins, but also the interface between the caliper body and the rubber to stop it happening again too soon.

I’m with Juvecu on the use of rubber-safe grease. Nothing to do with the hydraulic system, a lot of regular automotive greases will cause rubber to expand and after a while you’ll never get the bellows type parts to sit neatly in the caliper.

Besides being rubber friendly, the grease needs not to run when heated. Use a grease made with that in mind.

Morning all...

So I've tried getting the carrier out of the caliper but it is well and truly stuck.

I'm almost at the point of ordering new callipers but could do with the cost to be honest.

My question is (being a brake noob) how free should the carrier move back and forth? I can probably get it to pull out about 0.5mm, is that is normal then I should I bother trying to get them apart?

Thanks

Pete

It needs to slide in and out smoothly and easily otherwise you're wasting your time doing anything else to the brakes......

Time for a bit more of this  :fix: I reckon.

First time I took the calipers off they were stuck. I put them on a block of wood so the don't get scratched and tapped the sliding mounts out with a hammer. Took a while but they came out.
The lithium grease Suzuki use don't last long and the resesses were corroded quite badly. Took a circular file and cleaned out the corrosion them used red rubber grease and havent had an issue with the sliders since.
