Intermittent dash failure.
« on: June 05, 2013, 23:11:47 »
Hi all. New member here. I ride a  2012 650 ABS. Anyone else had intermittent clocks failure after changing handlebars. Bike has been great. no problems at all until.....I changed mine  a couple of weeks ago. Immediately afterwards, wouldn't start and clocks kept resetting. Then was fine. Week later on a ride to Wales, the dash was constantly resetting and showing gibberish. Have done all the obvious fiddling with connectors and cables. Removed and checked switch gear but nothing works. It's completely intermittent and I can't reproduce it by waggling cables etc. driving me mad.

The most likely places are the big connector in the left side of the fairing and the connector to the instrument panel itself.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

Hi. Yeah thanks. I looked at the block in the fairing as saw mention  that there could be problems with the earthing. Not checked behind clocks yet . Will have a go tomorrow. Ta.  :)

If it keeps happening take it to your dealer, I can't think why changing the bars would cause this but I'd put the originals back on just in case it's traced to the switch gear..

Ummm. Lost rag. Gave the bars a few swift blows. Sorted . problem gone.
Obviously a bad connection somewhere.

Ohhh, 'lost rag'.. The problem wasn't traced to a misplaced visor cloth then... Had to read that 3 times before I realised what I'd done wrong.

Oh dear.Dash problem is back. When ignition is switched on, bike doesn't perform the self test . Still starts and runs fine but, rev counter pulsing up and down, lcd display and warning lights on and off constantly. Have searched online for similar problems but barely a mention and nothing specifically like my problem. Am I that special. :)

Yeah, same checks as before, really. Loose battery terminals can cause all sorts of weird events! But it sounds like its the bars/fairing area, a connector loosened... :welcome:

Out of interest which bars did you fit?
