bar end weights install problem
« on: May 28, 2013, 14:11:57 »
ritghteo! took the bar ends off to install the grip puppies and when I went to install them again the screw simply spins around and dosnt tighten.
  :angry-tappingfoot:

I'm sure I'm missing something...inside the bar at the end you can see the rubber bung with a metal sleeve in the centre. I presume there is something further up the handlebars for the screw to go into. Has this moved further down the handlebar and now out of reach of the screw?

The secret with bar ends is not to fully unscrew the end. Only loosen it then pull the whole thing out. There should be anut at the very end. If u unscrew it all these bits stay inside the bars.  Only eay to get them out is drop your bike on its side or push something through thr bars.  Compressed air works good too
I'm sane, honestly. . . I got a certificate to prove it!

Taking the screw out all the way is your problem. It is just supposed to be loosened no more than 1/2". The #9 nut on the other end fits into a #8 rubber expander. With the screw removed the rubber can get pushed too far into the handlebar for the screw to reach. Now you have to fish out the parts to re-assemble them. A coat hanger may work. Also, you can take the other side out properly, then compressed air or a flexible shaft like one used to clean plumbing clogs can run through the bars to push out the parts.

Yeah instead of screwing into something it screws into itself and just expands in the bars until it is tight.

Sometimes I think I'm the only one who read the instructions and saw posts like this before the first time I took the weights off. I'm sure the list of "I did it right the first time" responders will be shorter at least.

I didn't need the instructions , on all other bikes we have , the bar ends just expand and if you take the end off , the nut would fall into the bars. Makes sense when you look at the construction but if you never did , you might think it screwed into something inside the bars...

But the bars are hollow!

Yeah, hollow.. Knowing this I assumed there must be some kind of compression mechanism holding the end weight in, so I loosened the screw and the weight started to move around, so I loosened it some more, pulled it out and did the other side.. At the time (many years ago now) I didn't consider myself some kind of mechanical genius but I've since come to discover that I must be. I never once thought 'ahh, these must be held in by some really complex nut retaining system fixed to the inside of a hollow tube'..

It still baffles me now, but every so often someone does it again.. Why, I just don't know..

Sounds overly flippant, it isn't meant to..

The problem with them is that you never quite know how far they can be screwed out before it all falls apart. I assembled mine outside of the bars, beat the ends of the bolt with hammer to spread it a bit so that I can't undo the nut all the way. I shouldn't have the problem again :)

Just unscrew them enough to be able to pull them out, then stop. :)

3/4" starts to get marginal. 1/2" is perfectly safe. The screw only needs to be loose. As soon as there is any looseness, the expander is totally relaxed and the assembly may be removed. It's not a near thing at all. There is plenty leeway.
