Repair scuffed crash bar. (dropped bike)
« on: April 23, 2013, 09:40:05 »
I had my first spill this morning.  Admittedly it was at a pace slightly slower than walking but long story short.

The bike fell over and scuffed my engine bar.  Before I get any rust I want to touch it up asap.  What is the best paint match for the bars if anyone has done it before?

Thanks

Don't know about pro jobs, but some - Hammerite Kurust will keep the rot out in the meantime.  My opinion is that crash bars will take a few hits so save the pennies and just black hammerite them.

Indicators OK?

Don't know if this helps but I got both bars totally powder coated for 25 quid ... They arrived scratched and it worked out better for me to do this than send them back .. plus I told them it cost 40 quid and got 40 quid knocked off price  :neen:

I have been playing with this stuff to try and repair crashbar rust. It would do for scrapes as well.

http://www.diy.com/nav/decor/paint/spec ... Id=9261769

I have been trying to replicate the rubberised feel of the crashbars. First impression however is that I am not sure how hard wearing it will be and you will need many coats. I have been testing this with some scrap metal to see how it turns out and to compare with what is already on the bike.

Ultimately to fend off rust the first thing would be to get it covered with something. You can decide later how you want to finish it off.

Hope you are OK by the way.

Thanks for the advice.  I got some hammerite which I will sand down and spray.

If I scruff again I will get poweredcoated, although would need to find one down here.

My front mudguard is cracked as well, anyone know where I can get a replacement?

Thanks

How badly is it cracked? Could it be repaired?

Was all the way across and now I have snapped it off as I don't want it flying off. :-)

Oh Lordy, what did you do to the poor thing?

Might be safer to remove the mudguard if you need to ride the thing in the interim.

It was just the front tip, the rest if fine.

Have googled to death but I can't find where to buy a replacement from.

robinsons foundry will sell you one, but that's at oem prices.

Time to do a high mudguard mod and stick some knoblies on? :auto-dirtbike:

Depending how much is cracked of how about reshaping it with a file. You might not even know unless you had 2 bikes side by side
1986 Honda VFR 750 FG
1986 Yamaha XJ900F

V-strom now sold :-(

I would powder coat it again to be honest , a little more expensive but it will look better in the long run and gets rid of the rust underneath . hammerrite can be put on rust but I'd still be wary. Perhaps red would go nice with the black plastics... :D

I only scrapped it yesterday.  Took advice on here.  Wet and dry sandpaper, alchol rub down and hammerite.

Looks as good as new :-)
