Brake Disc Replacement
« on: April 10, 2013, 18:38:02 »
Hi all

Looking to get my discs replaced, been quoted fronts: 225.96, rear: 65.50.

Does anyone know anything about these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Suzuki-DL650- ... 0322432490

Or does anyone have any recommendations?

Thanks!

They look OK, but I wonder what will happen if and when the geomet surface wears off and you could be left with discs that goes rusty every time it gets wet. The price looks quite high as well and it might be better to have a look at something from EBC who have been around for years which should be around the same price. The problem with all the discs you can find on Ebay is that you don't really know where they've come from or the material spec. and quality of the manufacture and finish.

aluminum center sections... I'm sure the OEM disks are steel as mine rusts in the winter if I don't bother cleaning them.

the price does seem too cheap to me considering what the price for disks usually are, I wouldn't buy them. they could turn out to be junk and you fit them and they fail and it's your life on the line.

Don't skimp on brakes.

I'm going to have to replace the disks all round this year, and I'll get EBC ones.

I can state that once the finish has worn off they will rust. I have one of these style discs on the back of my GS and it has rusted terribly this winter. Even sticks sometimes when left overnight. Its EBC in the future for me.

I used these for my front discs http://www.blackshadow-uk.co.uk/Suzuki.html. See the thread here viewtopic.php?f=58&t=14615&hilit=blackshadow

I have done over 10k miles on them and wear has been good. I put the bike away at Christmas for three weeks and when I got the bike out there was some light surface rust and the pads felt like they were lightly binding, but by the time I got to the end of the street they were fine and when I got home there was no sign of rust. Maybe it wouldn't have been a problem if I had cleaned it and let the disks dry before putting it away for three weeks.

For the price they are a bargain.

Good price. Does he do standard, non wavy, ones?

Have you used yours in salt?

I have exactly the same ones. White layers wears off straight away. I have done about 10k miles without any problems. However if I leave the bike wet and not ride it for a couple of days the will bind.

The best disk WILL go rusty when wet and unused. Anything that prevents this is a lubricant.

He only does the one wavy pattern. Whilst not sheep dipped in salty water, I did use them all winter on salty roads, only stopping a few weeks ago as I am between jobs.

Well I ride all year round. None of my OEM disks rust. But those cheapy ones off Ebay rust like the Titanic.

How fast they rust will depend on the type of steel.

Different grades of stainless are more or less resistant to rust, and are more or less hard. I believe that the rule of thumb is the more resistant to rust the softer (quicker wearing) they are.

How fast they rust depends on the carbon content and structure. The more open the structure, the closer to cast iron they are, they better the micro-surface for braking, the more they will rust. A good structure clears when used, so perfect for the all year rider. The chromed, stainless, WD40'd stuff is for Harleys and other garage sculptures.
