wee gearbox
« on: April 04, 2013, 20:19:49 »
Hi All
Fairly new to the wee having covered a mere 500 miles on my 2010 model with 18700miles.
Have noticed on hard acceleration the bike does not want to change up from 2nd to 3rd. When accelerating gently no problems. Have also noticed when hot the odd time difficulty finding neutral. Takes a good prod to get it out of 2nd and clunks into first, then the same the other way a good pull up to get it out of neutral and it clunks into 2nd by passing neutral. This only happens occasionally, but the acceleration problem is always there. Anyone had these problems. All advice gratefully accepted.
Thanks

Not heard much of this problem , the Wee gearbox is known to be nice and smooth . Is your clutch adjusted as it should be ?

Agree about getting the cable adjustment right. Might also be worth checking that the release mechanism  is also free and not sticking, plus the engine oil type is correct (10/40) and not over filled.

The clutch cable adjustment is separate from the clutch adjustment. Both need to be checked if there is a problem.

cleaning the gunk off the inside of the front sprocket cover and all the moving parts underneath it may make a difference, I had oil and half the welsh country side in there!

Chain tension can also effect gear change, normally first to second but it's worth checking

Thanks for all your suggestions, did both clutch adjustments as per Greywolf post, chain adjustment OK, and I have cleaned crud out of the front sprocket area. Symptoms still the same on hard acceleration just will not change until you close down the throttle and try again, then she will change gear, keep the suggestions coming please.

If you're accelerating hard and ready for a quick upward change it's possible your foot is already pressing upwards on the gear lever which may be upsetting it and preventing the clean upward change.

+1 on chain tension. If it gets too slack on mine then she doesn't want to go from first to second, and generally gets very clunky on all changes.

Too tight will cause more problems than too loose. Set the proper tension at the tightest part of the wheel rotation if it is uneven.

THANKS  MAELSTROM I was inadvertently doing exactly what you said. Have now adjusted gear lever slightly so I am not putting pressure on the lever during  a quick up shift and Hello presto smooth change :)  :)
Thankk you for all the other suggestion. This is a great forum
