brake screw
« on: March 16, 2013, 13:24:35 »
Hi. Toping up my brake fluid I stripped the screw head. I got it out after a battle but does anyone know a suitable replacement?

Stainless steel ones from ebay, screwfix or the like, M4 x 15 if I remember correctly  :thumb:

If you were anywhere near Northumberland I have a couple in the garage.

I did that too. I looked for a bit and happen to find an old power socket and used the screw of there as a temp measure. Bought stainless after

It really bugs me how a 15 min job turns into a hour due to a bloody screw.

Thanks for the advise, off to ebay now.

I love how I can get an answer to my problem even before I have finished the job

Sadly in my experience most bikes tend to suffer with this issue. Monkey metal shite quality screws with a horrid phillips head that invariably rounds off when you try and remove it. Normally one of the first jobs I do is to remove these and fit replacement stainless steel items, a smear of alu-seize on the threads and under the head will aid removal next time  :fix:

One thing that helps is to use a proper JIS screwdriver, even the one in the tool kit. Phillips screwdrivers are close enough in most circumstances but the cross head screws on Japanese equipment are the slightly different Japanese Industry Standard screws.

Yes I always use a good quality Phillips screwdriver , it seems a perfect fit . A lot of folk will use a Posi-drive and it will feck the screws up .

so... next bolt needed....
The allan bolt on the front mudguard is stripped.  Should be OK to get out but what is the replacement and where can you get them?

Google Namrick if you are going to buy more than a tenners worth or can't find the size you need on e-bay. They sell the lot, both grades of stainless, cap head, hex head, slot head, pan head, 8.8, 10.8, 12.8, titanium.....

It would be great if you could replace all the different fasteners with just hex heads and allen key bolts , I don't see why we still use phillips head screws on stuff which is always seizing , they are just begging to be stripped.

Agreed, although the hex bolt in the front mudguard was made of cheese and just stripped.

Does anyone know that name and type needed and I will order a couple?

any one know if JIS drivers bits tend to come in those multi kits of driver bits - one sees from far east as drill bit / drivers etc ...and how you can tell ? I have some which say PH2 ? presumably phillips 2 ..so if they are JIS will they say so? ...

cannot see JIS screwdrivers at anything other than extortionate prices in uk sites   .. have to buy them next time in japan ? ...however try asking for them there ?????

As greywolf says , they will be speciality tools so you will need to pay a premium for them. Good tools will last longer than your bike though , so I wouldn't shy away from the idea too quickly to be honest.

I would love to replace the lot.
Back to my original question, any idea what I need to search for for the front mudguard hex bolts?

Thanks
