anyone help to find a 12v socket like this?
« on: March 03, 2013, 22:13:58 »
found a usb charging socket that you can screw charging leads onto so it stays 100% waterproof wile in use. what I want is a 12v socket version of this usb one that can screw the charging leads onto. does such a thing exist? link below of the usb one

or am I going overkill on this and just stick a normal 12v charger on and a drop of acf50 on it.

No I want the charging cable to screw onto the front of the charger. from the charger to whatever device it is your charging. just like the one in the link.

Any panel waterproof socket and plug would work , napkins may do them or SN electrical wholesaler or marine supply shop.

Don't worry it's not your fault. You have not suddenly lost the ability to use the English language.

I don't know either why these folks are not reading the question but trying instead to answer the question in their heads. To me it's obvious; you need it to be waterproof WHILE IT'S CONNECTED. Easy peasy.

Having said that, sorry I can't help.

Ha ha. yeh that's it spot on mate. Have tried looking for a 12v cigarette style socket with screw on threads at the front to screw on a charging cable, just like the usb one in the link. Dosnt have to be screw on, just so that the connection remains waterproof when you are using it. obviously the screw on connection is more secure and the charging cable can't pull out

Unless I'm mistaken the one in my link is waterproof in use.

Waterproof is not a big deal for simple electrical connections. 12V DC wiring can be done under fresh water. It's electronics and semiconductors that have to be protected. The handlebar switches on the bike are not waterproof and they usually work fine. Dissimilar metals in a wet environment can corrode by galvanic action though.

+1 what Greywolf said.
I never did find one that looked entirely waterproof while in use. But it really doesn't matter too much, for the reasons above.IMO.
This is what I got, with a matching socket from the same supplier, they click together and allow very little water in while in use (I plug my car sat-nav in, and no problems in some truly torrential rain). More water gets in when I wash the bike, just a matter of a quick dry with a cloth after.

I got one off ebay for £5 by buying the terminals for £3 and a fuse holder and fuses which came to another £2. Got some spare wire to extend it over to my battery and done. Zip tied it under my seat with a bit of old school jumper so it dosen't mark the paint. I think that I will switch it out to a genuine one for peace of mind though :)
