Dr bike heated gips don't heat hot enough
« on: January 25, 2013, 12:36:46 »
I was riding back home yesterday and realised that my fingers were freezig off.
I turned the grips thing all the way to boiling hot (as it used to be) but after about 10 minutes they were only just noticeable warmer.
I tried turning it off and back on, changing from hi to low but nothing worked.

The power is getting to the grips because the heat up and the regulation works too as it is cooler at the low setting compare to hi, but those who use Dr.Bike grips know that on the hi setting I should not be able to hold on to them for long period.

I have the connected via original Suzuki relay via horn conector.

The only thing extra on the bike are cree vis lights installed last weekend.

Would it be that there is not enought power for the heated grips?

Help
Kamil

I had a lil trouble with heated grips before. My old ones were not great as they did not fully heat up all the way round, my fingers were always cold. I bought some got grips that heat all over and they work great. I've had no problem with electrical drain affecting it and I've loads of mods switched on. Only thing I can think of is it plugged in to the correct place (the plug above the radiator)  or a wire is loose. Or maybe one of the wires in the grips has been damaged
I'm sane, honestly. . . I got a certificate to prove it!

The Suzuki OEM heated grip connector is not relay controlled. It is switched by the ignition switch. Try temporarily connecting the grips to the battery. If they get significantly hotter, the problem is in the contacts and connections. If not, the problem is in the grips or controller and bypassing the controller will determine which.

More like the charging system. That's the part that keeps the voltage up when running. If the battery is so bad it keeps the voltage down, it won't start the bike.

The voltage at the entrance to the controler is the same as what's on the battery.

When I check what voltage is on the connectors that do to grips it shows 0. Only when I move the controler bit to the left or right, then it shows 0.1V to 1V

I guess that rhis proves that it's rhe controler, right?

Right. Having a hand held voltmeter makes the testing easier.

If the controller has an auto cut-off it might also indicate low battery voltage.....  What is the reading?

Battery reading is 12.4V - 12.7V. It's OK right?

That's a fine reading.  It goes up to 14.6 when you rev to 3k doesn't it?

Anywhere from 13.5V to 14.8V at 3000rpm and 12.6V to 14.8V at idle is acceptable.

Just checked it again and it is 14.2v from idle to 6k rpm.

I went and bought the Oxford v8 controller http://www.ghostbikes.co.uk/products/winter-motorcycle-clothing-hot-grips/8852-Oxford-hot-grips-v8-switch.html

It has the same connections as the Dr.Bike controller so it should be straight swap

And it was the controller. Now my combo heated grips are:
wiring and grips - Dr.Bike
controller - Oxford v.8
It was straight swap, take the old one off put the new one in. Same connectors.
I am little disappointed that the Dr.Bike grips (controller) only lasted just over a year.

Bonus is that I got this voucher with the controller. I guess that anyone can use it :)
