Trail Wing 101 152
« on: January 20, 2013, 19:48:50 »
What's wrong with them?. They were on the bike when I purchased it...and to be honest I havent really had any issues with them. Current mileage approx 3200, I will be going to Germany in May and looking to do approx 2000mls, I know the problem will be how many miles will I do before I go. So what Mileage have you got from yours. I will be switching to Michelins but I'm thinking shall I order new ones before or after the trip. I am not a lover of Bridgestone's found they didn't last as long as other manufacturers and as I've always had Michelins on the R1 it has made my mind up to stick with what you feel confident with.

I have had two rear trailwings and both lasted around 7k miles. The front was more like 10k miles.

Trailwings actually last quite a long time (fairly hard compound  )
You should get 7k to 12k quite easily. Changed mine at 7k, the rear was half worn & the front not even that.
I had no problems with them in the dry, its in the wet that they are.............

I just bought a set of Trailwings, not had any problems with them up to now, so if it ain't broke, I ain't going to fix it. I doubt I could out ride them anyway.

I've done just shy of 6000 miles on the present set. I could probably get another 1000 but the back has squared off and the front is nearly there anyway, so thought I'd change them.

I doubt any of us could, I don't have a problem with them but I think I might go for Michelin's when they are due to be changed, only done 3500 on them, will be going away end of May and not sure how many miles I will put on the bike before I go. Decision is do I just change the rear and stick with what I have or change them both anyway. Don't like waste  :GRR:

I've had a front end slide with my TWs, dry road affording good grip, end of the summer, warm tyres.. They're not great. I guess that's why they've been superseded and dropped.. I'll use them up though, just ride around any shortfall..

replaced the original tw's after 6k miles. tated the ride. they scalloped badly and felt terrable in the wet.
replaced with michelin PR1's and loved the bike once again. but I fancied some more ruff stuff and anakee 2's went on and I havent looked back.
will put another rear anakee in a few weeks.
k60's are an option in the future.

Mine has near 9000 on now and still on original trailwings. I don't like the ride in the wet so much, I don't feel as though they give enough feedback, but there again common sense says if you don't like it slow down a bit.

there's still a good 2.5mm on the rear but it is a little sqaure. The front is oright, about 2 mm on that too :)

The important thing that newer riders should understand is that bikers talk more bollocks about tyres than any other biking topic. The only exception to this is V-Strom riders who talk bollocks about windscreens even more.

What I know about the trail wings is that I could activate the abs with strong braking in the dry, and they would get twitchy over cats eyes. Riding within their limitations was fine, I mean they never stopped me scraping pegs, I just knew they were twitchy and I needed to leave a bit more room for braking.
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

Couldn't agree more. I have been riding for 30yrs and must say all tyres will out perform the riders, I find its a matter of confidence and what you like and don't like. Like I said in my thread I have no problem with the trail wings, but I won't be going off road on the vstrom (not intentionally anyway) I don't want the heidiwotthenames and the all out terrain tyres. I tour abroad and in the UK so I am looking for a good road tyre that will give me the mileage and the confidence in the tyre.
so far I have looked at Michelin, Pirelli, Conti's and so on, but the list is endless and new tyre designs all the time, Just want a decent tyre but so many to choose from. I would be going with the trail wings if the mileage on the set on the bike were not already 3700, probably 4500 before we go. I don't want to be looking for tyres abroad.

I do like Michelin but just been quotes approx. £280 ride in for PR3  :GRR:
and as an alternative Conti trail attack ride in £160 but back to trail tyres  :angry-tappingfoot:

My rear has worn out after 9500 miles.
replacing with another Trailwing - no complaints except for the price. that's a load of cash for a bit of rubber.

They should be fairly cheap given that they are an old, superseded, tyre that is no longer in production.

I'd have another on the rear if the front still has loads of meat on it..

7.5k on the wings and still going strong. Think I will stick with them. (If I can get some more that is) must admit I'm looking to get a more road going tyre though.  :lala:
