Servicing Schedule Advice

Hi,

I got my 2010 V-Strom just before Xmas and, when asking about the servicing record was told that the first two services had been at a Suzuki registered dealer, the next three had been done by a bike mechanic used by the previous owner for all his bikes, plus the ones used at the bike training school he used.

I have been pushing to get a fuller picture of what was done at the last service but the previous owner seems to be struggling to acquire this information for me. This all suggests to me that there wasn't a regular service history on the bike as I might have hoped for.

The bike looks fine, no leaks and it rides nicely, starts every time and has not manufacturer warnings on the dash. It has 16,500 on the clock and I am going to assume that I need to start from scratch with the servicing (oil, oil filter, inspection/clean/ replace if necessary air filter). I will look at the plugs and change if necessary etc, etc.

My question is probably going to end up being a complete newbie question, please go easy (What better place to ask the question than here), the Owner's Manual details a service schedule up to 14500 miles or 48 months, but what happens after that. Do you start over in the schedule?

manual says that you should service your bike avery 3500 miles or once a year. so 14500 then 18k then 21,5k and so on. you can service it now if you have any doubts about the oil, filter etc  and do the next one in 3500miles.

Yes, just repeat the earlier services schedule, without the 600 mile break-in service of course.. So it'll go, 18,000 same as 4,000 then 21,500 same as 7,500.. And so on..

On my last Suzuki I stretched them to 4,000 mile intervals as its easier to remember.. I'll be doing the same with this one..

Don't forget the valve shim check/adjustment....the first one should have been done/be due, given the sketchy info I'd assume its not been done.

You'll have to at least have them checked, most of the time they are OK & do not need adjustment, but you won't know that unless you have them checked.

Things that get overlooked by pros and amateaurs alike are the bolt tightening checks.  Worth being religious about those as I have suffered both a high speed chainguard loss (bolt smashed the car windscreen behind me I think.....) and floppy handlebars - luckily in the car park.
