Front caliper pistons and seals
« on: December 10, 2012, 21:29:03 »
Hi blokes,

Need to replace front pistons and seals for my 2009 DL650 (stock brake calipers).  Can't seem to find anywhere doing the pistons and seals for my model year.  Rear not a problem.

There is a front piston and seal kit on ebay for 04-06 DL650's, would they fit my 09?

They're all the same. And SV650 plus 600 Bandit and probably a load of others as well all have the same Tokico calipers.

Don't spend out on the ones you've seen though. Go to an independent bike shop. The seals are generic (27mm for the fronts I think). The dealer can buy packs of five piston and dust seals for about a fiver. Pistons can be bought from similar source by diameter and length.

The mark up by those ebay sellers is ridiculous.  :angry-tappingfoot:

The 04-06 front caliper pistons and seals may not the same as your 09! I got a set of 04-06's to fit my ak7 and they didn't...

What is wrong with the pistons?  I was under the impression 1200 emery paper will cure all piston related ills?  Seals are cheap, pistons less so....

Correcting my own post. The part numbers changed in 2007 when ABS became available.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.

What's the difference?  Useful to know, as I spend so much time cleaning up my non-ABS pistons.

I got it wrong. The front caliper part number changed in 2007 when the ABS bikes came out, but both ABS and non ABS on later bikes use the same caliper.

You shouldn't need to change the pistons unless you've really screwed them up scratching them badly with tools or something on their outsides. Just clean the callipers and the pistons using the old brake fluid and, as Strommer says, a bit of fine water paper cleans them up well. Use brake fluid instead of water though when you 'sanding' them to clean them. If you can clean them without sanding then do that, they will last longer. You can use a non-scratch pan scourer too, works well. They are cheap in packs of 6 or so at IKEA and together with the IKEA plastic angled head dishwashing brushes you have a set of decent caliper servicing tools

Edit: IKEA Brushes: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/30151479/
Can't find the scourers they have though.

OK. I'm in the same boat but not sure I have fully understood this. Where should I go for a kit for the front brake callipers on my no abs 2008 k7 wee cause I'm confuddled.

If its only the seals you need then take a little trip to your nearest independent bike shop. Ask the bloke behind the counter to get his Hi Level book out and find part number 292700. This is a pack of five piston seals and five dust seals in 27mm size. The cost to him is peanuts and he should be able to get them by the next day. He may even sell you loose ones from stock.......

OK. I may do that. Was hoping to do the rest (washers, dust boots, bleed nipple) while I had them off thus looking for a kit. Have had to take the wee off the road because the brakes got so bad. Meanwhile riding my wife's YBR125 to work. Don't mind the lack of power but the lack of faring makes me want to get those callipers sorted ASAP so I may just do the seals and do a full overhaul next year.

I am the next one to be in the same boat.

When I was changing my left hand side brake pads to EBC HH I noticed that the pistons are covered in rust and grime :(. In addition the dust seals came out and the pads holder was stuck in one position.

I have 2010 wee and will need the pistons, seals and rubber slide rod gaiter.

Will any year wee parts fit mine? All I can find on Ebay is up to 2006 maybe 07

Thanks

Kam

Both Wee and Vee use the same seals, rubbers, piston, brake pads, etc. (at least on the front.) I'm pretty sure the Glee is the same too, someone can correct me if I have that wrong.

When I used to run an old Bandit I always had two sets. One on the bike and one being  cleaned up in a comfortable warm shed. Used to swap over about half way through winter. Had direct twin line braided hoses so bleeding then was a 20 min job.

That was one of the best things about a Bandit, you could get spares off ebay cheap as chips. Might get another at some point as I still have loads of spares.
I look quick therefore I am.

I read somewhere that bandit has the same callipers as wee and sv650. If that is the case I may be able to find something cheap.

From looking at the caliper pistons on my bike I thought that they were the same size but looking at the below photo it appears that they are different. Or is it just a bad photo? Could someone clarify for me, please?

They are different sizes, off the top of my head I think one is a 32mm and the other a 34mm diametre. Don't quote me on that, I don't have the standard calipers on my Wee any more so my memory of the stock ones is a bit flaky.

I thought all the non abs calipers were the same for v and wee. I ended up going direct to the dealer for mine. I'm pretty sure for my k7 both pistons and seals were identical up front.

Shows just how little I still know, even having done a caliper overhaul. Wish I'd just stumped up and let my mechanic do the work. Cost me a good 6 hours of my life trying to get them cleaned up and bled and they still weren't the best until I paid him half an hour to bleed them and grease them properly.

Would love to keep spare calipers for a quick change over midwinter but they just cost too much and frankly, there's plenty of evidence it would, in my case, be money poorly spent. I'm finding I quite like taking my bike to my mechanic every two months in the off season. I pay him for an hour used as he sees fit (£40), go for a coffee and come back to a much happier wee. It's a cop out but saves me time and I feel a lot more confident so it's worth the money. Mean while I pretty much just adjust pressure and deflection.

I have 2 sets of original Wee calipers in the garage, but no idea where they are else I'd go measure the pistons. Someone else is bound to know if I have it right or not.

I will get in contact with Suzuki directly to find out.

Juvecu - if those calipers that you have lying in your garage would fit 2010 abs wee (which I will find out tomorrow) and you would be interested to sell them let me know.

The two pistons and seals in each front caliper are identical. http://www.mrcycles.com/oemparts/a/suz/ ... nt-caliper
