how to wire in my bike vis bulletts?
« on: December 09, 2012, 16:31:53 »
going to install the bike vis bullets on my hand guards and was wondering what wiring I would need to tap into. I would have thought the sidelight wiring would be best....? not good with electricals so any advice welcome....

what colour is the wiring, solder and heat shrink or pozi tap etc.

For wire colours, brown is hot for the position lights. It is hot when the ignition switch is on or in park. Orange with a green stripe is hot only when the ignition is on. Earth is black with a white stripe. All may be found in a large connector under a rubber cover in the left side of the fairing if you have trouble locating the proper wire.

Posi Taps and solder are both good methods. Solder has the advantage of being more immune to corrosion. Posi Taps have the advantage in areas where the wire flexes in use, like the transition from frame to handlebars. Soldered wire can work harden with movement over time and break where flexible wire meets the inflexible soldered jopnt. A soldered connection needs to have the wire immobile on both sides of the joint.

thanks greywolf. will prob use the posi tap method then if I can't get the wires secure. one silly question though, the bike vis bullets have two wires coming out of them. solid black and black with white stripe. what would I need to connect these two wires too on the bike. I know you mentioned some, but just wondering if you could tell me exactly which ones. I have no clue about electronics that why I ask

I take it I connect the black/white stripe wire on the bike vis bullets to the black/white stripe on the bike. then the black wire on the bike vis bullets to the Orange with a green stripe or os the brown better? whicj would be best?

The white striped wire is positive on the bullets. Connect it to the brown wire on the bike if you want it to be on when using the park position on the ignition switch. If you want it to be off in the park position, connect it to the orange/green wire. If you don't use the park position on the ignition switch, either brown or orange/green will do. Ignore any coloured dots on the wires. They are not part of the colour code.

Connect the all black wire on the bullet to a black wire with a white stripe on the bike. As I said, all those wires are available at a large connector in the left side of the fairing.

I could connect both positive ends of the bike vis bullets together using oine posi tap couldn't I? therefore using only two posi taps for the installation?

what size/gauge of posi tap is best to use on the bike?

Piccys please when it's done. I have a set to fit + a Podmod. I was thinking of mounting them similar to Gassoons under the cowl or actually in the indicators. Not sure which gives the best view for on coming vehicles.

As long as the leads are long enough it's possible. What could be a problem is wire size. I don't know the size of the bullet's wires. Chances are they aren't too heavy as they are feeding LEDs. It's likely two blue Posi-Taps will do the trick in that case.

I'm not sure if they are long enough. might have to extend the wires... will get them roughly into place fist though.

hasd a quick search for posi tap connecters there and they arnt as easy found as I had thought. I will try my local car autoparts place tomorrow. seem to be £8 for a pack of 6 whn I find them on the net.

which ones on this page would do, as they are all red but give different sizes in mm2....

not sure about mounting them on the indicators though......suits the rear OK as you get a better idea of how wide the bike is. not sure about mounting them on the front indicators though....

Are you planning on using the PodMod with these?

I fitted the Bullets to my current bike (not a wee) back in April and they have been great. Was wondering about adding the PodMod but held off until I get my wee.

Podmod could get you problems with the police as they might see these as flashing, def not on in the UK

The link to the second batch of photos is my wee. I run the rear bullets off a blue lagoon fuse box and the front tapped into the main headlights.
