hid query
« on: December 05, 2012, 15:29:40 »
got my bive vis order to find out that an HID "kit" is only for one bulb not both as I had thought...

ideally I would one both to be HID however I got this email back:

Quote
The HID kits are only sold as single bulbs.... the reason mainly being for this is that most bikes cannot take the high startup load of a double HID (around 80 Watts * 2). This load then drops but not before the arc in the bulbs has failed to light.

is the above true or can the vstrom handle both bulbs being HID?

I also noticed on the wiring harnesss they sent has a double rocker switch unit between the h4 connector and the ballast which adds to the amount of stuff to find a place for (as well as a small black box between the HID light and ballast); I was told via email

Quote
The switches on the unit change the polarity of the high / low beam pins (to cater for all manufacturers), try them both in one position, and if no joy switch them both to other..

I thought the kit was going to be a simple case of an HID light and a slim ballast not a pile of other stuff as well :angry-tappingfoot:

My VVME kit was a car kit. It had two lamps with solenoids in the bases for high and low beam, two ballasts, a relay and wiring. The high draw is only for seconds upon startup and a 10A fuse has handled the job for years.

I bought the same kit as grey wolf for two bulbs and it cost me 60 pounds including postage from US.

well I presume the black box to the right of the ballast in the pic is a relay? still don't understand why they made the double switch in the circuit. even though he expalined it to me in the email. I have not heard of any other kits doing it?? I could unlip it from the loom OK but then I would loose the h4 (3 pin connecter up in the top right of the pic

here is the link for the kit I got:

do you have a link for your kit longman?

I haven't installed mine yet. I have this link from mjc. He has got the same kit installed. We went to brugge on a trip together last year and his lights were amazing. This is why I decided to buy a set as well. I am sure he will be here shortly so he can give you more info.

VVME ships from China, not the USA. They use DHL express and I got the kit faster than many USA sites I've ordered from.

Yeh I think I will get them, get a set of 2 for less than the one I bought.  sending it back tomorrow, if you blokes are happy enough with them, that's good enough.

Make sure to get the Bi-Xenon H4 kit with slim digital ballasts. 4300K is the best color temperature for light output and visibility in all conditions. Bluer lights hurt night vision and scatter in fog.

That's the one. I'm happy with mine. Prices seem to keep going down.

Price is very good (£32) but delivery to UK adds £29
I guess at £60 they're still cheap as you get 2 units as opposed to some charging this for 1 unit.
I'm tempted as I want one to fit to the car (I guess this'll fit a car as well as a bike)

Yeah, I've got that set too, in 4300k. Great light output, and less power draw. I guess technically not legal (unless you've got headlight washers and self levelling) but just unplug them for mot time :-)

Delivery is from China by air. That's why it is so expensive and just takes a few days. Surface delivery could take a week or more.
