New KTM makes New Vee look very ugly!
« Reply #20 on: November 18, 2012, 18:40:19 »
What about the NC700X?

They have come onto my radar over the last week, and seem like a decent bike. Nicely styled, amazing mpg, but perhaps a bit too small for someone my height ( 6'3"). Anyone had any experience with them? Seems a 2012 can be had for £4750ish which is a bargain, especially if its the sort of machine that would be über relative and economical.

I think it looks great in the pictures I've seen... they've done a good job at making it look more classy, but maintaining the KTM orange hooligan look at the same time. Looks like a grown up KTM.

In 2 or 3 years I intend to get a 1000cc+ bike... my current preferred options in this order would be:

1) Triumph Tiger Explorer XC (looks the business in that khaki green!)
2) I'm sorry... but... the new BMW R1200GS if it's more reliable than the outgoing model
3) New KTM
4) Ducati Multistrada

Not convinced by the idea of the new Vee. From what has been revealed about it so far, it is under-specced compared to all the bikes I've just listed. So, lets say they compete on price instead and offer it for £9000 compared to £11000-£13000 for the bikes above. If I'm already spending roughly £10k on a bike, I'll pay the extra to get the better bike. Don't want to spend that much money and still feel like I settled for 2nd best.

Funny my list is almost the same but upside down. Ducati is definitely first on my list. One day when I open my garage there will be my trusty red wee and red multistrada next to it:)

Therein lies part of the problem in all this. "Better" is a big generalisation and means different things to different people. The BMW is "better" because it has electronic fly-by-wire, bluetooth integrated, multi-mode ball warmers. The new DL1000 is "better" because it doesn't, so they can't go wrong. And so on...

EDIT: And if that doesn't get me a place in the quotes museum I want a refund.

I think I would have ms pikes peak especially even if it was considered the worst bike on the planet;) after a test ride I can't stop thinking it's the best bike I have ever ridden. Did not ride a lot of bikes I have to confess:grin:

Oh totally... but I'm a sucker for gadgets :)  Standard cruise control on the Tiger Explorer appeals to me for motorway slogging. And the good alternator output also appeals to me for accessory running.

The biggest reason I have the Triumph and BMW top of the list though is that shaft drive really appeals to me. I know I'm trading day to day ease for the risk of a big bill if it goes wrong... but that's the kind of lazy chap I am!  :shy:

Electronic cruise control. Mmmmm! I love it. It can be put on a Strom though. It is not necessary to change bikes.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

It costs nearly a grand though doesn't it? That's money that can go into my 1000cc+ bike saving fund! :)

It can be had for under $200. http://www.murphskits.com/catalog/produ ... cts_id=422
I did try a different one this time but still nowhere near a quarter grand, even in $ USD. http://www.murphskits.com/catalog/produ ... cts_id=369

Mine arrived a few weeks ago (gone with the CCS1000 with the vac can). Looking forward to doing the install, but figure it'll take more than a couple of hours :)

You'll have to let me know how you get on. Think it'll be beyond me to install something like that though... will probably pay someone to do it if I get one!

Well, if you get yours soon enough you could join me and we could do both installs at the same time. That way if I'm going to feck up, I can do so on yours first  :haha: ... kidding!

Haha... tempting as that offer is, cruise control is near the bottom of a very very long list of things I want to buy :)

Drinking and cruise control installing is a recipe for disaster... I'm saving you from yourself!  :obscene-drinkingchug:

Install cruise control responsibly... make it smart enough to control the entire bike for me then I can drink 'til I'm pissed as a skunk doing loops around the M25 at 3AM!

The ugly bike argument holds no interest for me.
Surely what the bike does and how it does it should be more important.

Fully enclosed chain case final drive would hardly weigh much and would save a whole load of messy work
But not 'stylish so will never be seen.
Upside down forks are stylish so we get them and all the grit and muck that piles against the fork sliders and seals and we get exposed rear suspension units.
Suzuki say the front end of the 14Vee will be less 'bulbous' which may mean less frontal protection and of course a tiny little waste of space screen ( as fitted to the 1000 Verseys ugh!)
Style designers often have the last say over practicality and we end up with bikes that look  good to juveniles who can't afford them and when grown ups buy them they have spend loads of cash adding useful extras like bigger screens, mudguard extenders, scottoilers and mirrors that show what is behind etc.

KTM seats are made for skinny boys to ride on for up to 30 minutes at a time.
Although when I win the lottery I will get myself a 690.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

Saw the new KTM at the NEC. I thought it looked great.
