Went to the big Tesco in Reading, none :( Will try a few ones around Reading and if I have no luck I'll have a look around the ones in Rugby this weekend.

Whilst popping into the Brighouse branch for some biscuits. I spotted the deal. Picked up 3 bottles of power 1 (semi-synth). I think it was 2 pound seventy odd a litre, bloody silly not to.
Forgot the damn biscuits in the end.  lol

Just got told there this morning by a Suzuki mechanic that I shouldn't put fully synthetic in. can cause clutch slip apparently! Anyone shed any light on this. :wtf:

Let me clarify. As long as the oil has no friction modifiers in it there should be no issue.

Motorcycle oils do not have friction modifiers, some synthetic oils for cars do.

Sometimes you hear of a motorcyclist putting fully synthetic oil in their bike and getting clutch slip, therefore, it follows that all synthetic oils are bad.

He said to use semi synthetic oil. I told him I got fully sunthetic and he said take it back and get semi synthetic. can clutch slip.

I was like oh bollocks. I have 13 litres of the stuff. might phone round other Suzuki garages and see what they say

The mechanic is talking a load of bollocks.

As Frez so eloquently said, fully synth motorcycle oil has no friction modifiers so it will not cause clutch slip. Use the bottles you've got & be happy with your bargain.

I would be wary of going to that mechanic again if that's the standard of his "knowledge".

You might also ask yourself why Castrol would recommend both their Synthetic and Semi-Synthetic oils for our bike if they know it causes clutch slip, wouldn't that open themselves up to legal action to recover the costs of worn clutchs?

you shouldn't put car oil in, as it may cause clutch slip, but fully synth bike oil is fine! Tell your man he's a pillock :)

Like a lot of people I object to paying the premium prices for motorcycle oils and can't remember when I last bought any. I've been using car oils (full and semi synthetics) for years in a variety of bikes without any problems and will continue to do so. The only proviso I make is that I stick to oils form reputable companies and wouldn't stick something say from the £1 shop that may just be re-cycled old oil with a few additives chucked in. The argument against using a car full synthetic sounds good but I've never had a problem or have known anyone who has. Is it an urban myth to get us to buy expensive bike oils? Even if it has happened, I suspect it much less likely to happen in Vstrom engines and especially the 650.

Yeah, I imagine it'd be more of a problem putting slippy car oil in a blackbird than a wee, but comparing the extra cost of bike oil to replacement clutch/gaskets etc...

4 litres of synthetic car oil is about £5 cheaper than 4 litres of synthetic motorcycle oil, so at less than a fiver an oil change I'm happy to go for the motorcycle oil in the knowledge it has been designed for a high reving, mixed gearbox and engine environment.

I have been using the Castrol fully synthetic stuff for a while. Yes heard from others and was told by a Suzuki machanic same as. ...not to use it so satisfied myself re: friction modifiers and used it. Gear changes definately smoother, don't know why they just are on my bike. Definately no clutch slip.

I have enough to sink a battleship at tuppance ago...cheers Tesco's  :)
