Try the A702 from Thornhill to Elvanfoot - The end is right on the M74 for a quick ride back, but I think you will want to turn around and ride the A702 back again.

It's got valley's, hills, overhanging tree corridors, waterfalls, stray sheep and wide open flat plains. There's a single farmhouse in a valley a few hunded feet below the road, a photo of which I've seen on calendars before.

I've been through in the car many times, you can easily do two miles on the wrong side of the road, because nothings coming. My Brother lived in Closeburn and rode it on a Sprint ST many times, I haven't made it up there myself on the bike yet, but will do it if I go to Scotland.

If you do this, please take some pictures !

That road is called the Dalveen pass. As you go north from Dumfries you need to watch pretty carefully as you leave Thornhill. The road is signposted but it is just after a bend so go easy after Thornhill to avoid missing it.

Nice cafe in the middle of Thornhill called Drumlanrig Restaurant.

And don't go speeding out of Dumfries up the Holywood Straight on the A76, as the nice Police people hide behind a wall there. It's dead straight for a mile or two.

Hope I'm not too late, but don't come back down the same road. Head for Leadhills at Elvanfoot, then head for Wanlockhead and down through the Mennock pass.
I used to live in Elvanfoot and this was a great circular route.
It's better to regret something you've done, than something you haven't done.
