Repainting the engine cover
« on: July 10, 2012, 15:42:04 »
Any one got any tips or experience of repainting the engine covers. Mine have aged shockingly badly. I am hoping it is not a tin of Nitromors & a pot of Hammerite :GRR:

You can't repaint without paint so you have probably got a good idea of what's needed. Certainly don't need paint stripper. Get one of those sponges with the grit on and then some sheets of wet and dry.

Paint with silver engine paint from any car factor definitely don't go near hammerite.

At least you don't have a BMW, My GS was the devil of a finish on the engine (utter crap) and the RT was even worse as was hidden under tha fairing.

I used to fix with that silver metallic engine paint from car plan.

Thanks for the answers.

Re : the GS I thought they were all superior and I just could not afford one... not sure I want one now...

Re : the powder coating, I have no experience of this process. Does it have to be stripped back to metal for adhesion?

They all suffer from appaling paint on the front cover and fins. Google it and you will be amazed

I'm actually the national events co-ordinator for a BMW motorcycle club and after crashing my RT (hit a fox and smashed the bike up) and replacing with a GS that had a terrible finish even on the visible parts I won't have another.

So now, when I run a club event, I'm the only person there on a non BMW.

But at leasm my engine paint isn't falling off

What a great job... assumimg it did last the distance through a winter? Mine is a K2 but it appears the newer models still suffer... all the other panels etc... have aged well so why skint on the finish of these ones...Argh!!
