mirror extenders
« on: April 08, 2012, 17:26:06 »
Hi has anyone any experience of fitting mirror extenders to the new L2 wee? I've took the mirror arms off both sides and discovered they are both lefthand thread but there appears to be another spacer which goes between the arms and the boss on both the clutch and front brake levers and I'm blessed if I can shift these...do they need to come out in order to fit a straight forward mirror extender the sort you can buy off e bay or do the brackets come with lefthanded threads which I find difficult to believe
    many thanks for any suggestions

The base is a right hand thread and the stem a left hand thread. Mirror extenders were developed to go between the base and the mount in previous year bikes and that would still apply as long as there is clearance. The extenders are typically made with a right hand thread where the mirror mounts. Here is RichlandRick's from http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,6019.0.html

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

many thanks Greywolf....I obviously did'nt try too hard on the spacer in question as I was'nt sure which way the thread had been cut..armed with this knowledge I will now give it a bit more "welly" in order to shift it..as well as measuring said clearance...again many thanks

One problem powder coated parts sometimes have is getting some coating in the threads. I like to run a tap through first.

Yeah, but don't over do it, I have one I cannot tighten real well now cos I went overboard

Course, I could use some locktite if I wasn't so lazy
Keep an open mind, but not so open your brains fall out

Cheers

Fitted the spacers from Suzuki to my L2 without too much problem. One thought, you don't want them too tight so that if you topple over, the mirrors might just swivel around and not smash, but if you're never going to fall off .....

I didn't think the Suzuki ones made that much difference, I've used similar ones to the ones Greywolf has on another bike and it seems to make more of a difference. Not sure about clearance on our L2, but maybe you could combine the Suzuki and Greywolf style ones?

Other than the obvious of getting more then elbows in the mirrors, has anyone had any benefit with less buffeting whilst using them?

Fancy a brew at Loomies PM me.

Just to be clear, my bike doesn't have extenders.

Mine certainly buffets less with the extenders on than it does without.

I have similar (they look exactly the same) extenders to the ones Piglumps linked above on my old K5 Wee.
