question for IT guru
« on: March 30, 2012, 16:45:48 »
hi
I just collected my new company laptop. the only problem is that we can't instal any software on it because I haven't got admin rights.so I came up with an idea. laptop runs win 7 and I thought I could instal linux alongside windows so when I turn it on I could choose which system I want to lunch (windows without admin rights our LINUX with full on access)
am I correct or there is something that I am not aware of that makes it impossible? thanks

Have you tried turning it off then back on again or hitting it with something?

That's the full extent of my IT support...

Wasn't Linux one of the characters in Peanuts?

That sounds reasonable enough.  you just set up Linux on a different partition on the drive and choose which partition to boot from when you turn it on.

Do make sure its not a sackable offence (IT security) by tampering with your companies IT, I know I'd get my P45 if I did that to one of my works laptop.

Yes, you probably could, providing they haven't bit-lockered the drive (which I think would prevent you from partitioning it). Would be better to get them to give you local admin rights to Windows. Find a friendly one and ask.

Stick linux on a memory stick and run it from that.  No need to install anything.  You can even install software on the stick.  Ubuntu 10.0.4 seems stable.

Poke me when you have time and I can help you with sorting out the best solution, I used to configure and install Linux servers for a living when I was still in South Africa.
