Renthal 43 tooth
« on: March 22, 2012, 18:07:22 »
Fitted this new Renthal 43 tooth rear sprocket on my (2008) DL1000 just last week, two more teeth than normal, really enjoying the benefits OK, had a good 75 bike run today away buying/fitting a new Metzeler Tourance rear tyre, so time to evaluate the new sprocket (and a TRE module), superb, top gear feels like it's in 5th gear with more pulling power...........I love it!!

I also fitted a 'TRE' module at the same time, so this also has helped smoooth out the low down stuff, really nice to ride now, a bigger/better improvement with the 'TRE' fitted (eBay purchase). Feels like riding a different bike now, I would highly recommend anyone considering a change of rear sprocket, do it, you'll love what it does!

Were you able to use the existing chain?

Yes, was able to use standard chain OK, you must adjust both chain adjusters back into housing to let chain go over sprocket etc, but no problems at all.

Bought the Renthal rear 43 tooth from; B&C Express (tel no, 01522 791369), from memory it was about £35 delivered, very prompt alright, I called them at lunchtime and had it next day, great to deal with.

Plus the lovely bronze/gold coloured Renthal sprocket is so easy to clean compared to the standard silver one.

A brilliant up-grade for really little dosh, so much easier to ride personally.

I went for the same size on my Vee and have to agree it made a huge difference. So much more drive out of corners and you can use 6th gear from an indicated 50mph. I didn't notice any difference to fuel consumption either, which was nice. The speedo is almost useless however, but a minor problem. If you take the secondary throttle butterflies out it will rev out in 6th....

Tell me more please about removing the butterfly's from the throttle bodies?

I spoke to a chap today at Phonenix Honda bike dealers in Falkirk who had done this, seems easy enough (apparently)..?

Has anyone done this mod?

Please tell.... I'm very interested!

How much did it affect the speedo mate?

To remove the secondary throttle butterfly valves you need to take the tank off, then the air box. You'll have the throttle bodies exposed, take the top round plates out of it. Careful not to drop any of the little screws in there and make sure to use a good fitting screw driver as the screws are brass and thread locked you don't want to mangle them.

Would an aftermarket sprocket like renthal eliminate the chain alinement issue? I noticed that there's a gap on one side of the chain (left side), which would require a spacer behind the sprocket to out a tad to centre the chain.

An aftermarket sprocket won't change anything. Check www.cymarcbikeparts.co.uk for a spacer, £20 I think and lots of reports on here that it works well. There are also people who say that things should be modified to move the sprocket 2mm into the hub rather than 2mm out. Search the forum, Cymarc will give you some forum discount, the instructions are somewhere. Top quality kit from him, he also makes other bits :thumb:

Yeah I read the post about moving the hub in but it involves a lot of stripping down, machining and then you still use a spacer. I think the cymarc may be the easier option. Does it actually make a difference to the gear change? I read it on his ebay auction.

Feedback on them often mentions smoother gear changes. Suzuki make pretty good gearboxes, smooth as the best of them, and if the spacer increases the smoothness so that it's noticeable by a lot of people then it's probably worth the £20 :)

You can use some washers instead, works just as well and will cost a lot less, up to you though :)

I believe it's 2mm, but you'd better do a search or ask if someone who has one knows the measurement.

I know nothing about using a spacer when the likes of a non-standard sprocket is fitted.....(??), never heard of this, when I fitted the 43 tooth Renthal sprocket I aligned the adjustment marks as per usual the exact same on each side etc, simple job.

Regards speedo;

At around 35-65mph it's out about 5mph, and around 80-100 it's out about 10mph, I've a Garmin sat-nav fitted so I can see exact speed etc. I really doesn't bother me personally, much improved grunt/snappy power is lovely, it totally changes the bike, I utterly love it!

I've owned my V-Strom DL1000 over three and a half years now, so I know it inside out, I should have done this slight upgrade years ago.............been missing out regards the fun factor it seems!!!

The spacer is to move the sprocket away from the carrier hub to align the rear sprocket with the front one.

The inner spacer is shortened by 2mm to move the sprocket carrier deeper into the hub and lessen any wobble. The 2mm is regained by adding it to the outer spacer.

So if you modify the inner and outer spacers that way does the sprocket stays in the same place relative to the front sprocket?
