Thank you gentlemen... the bag looks good but a little rich for my pocket so looking at cheaper items with greater capacity (you get what you pay for). One thing is for sure, its not as straight forward as I first thought, panniers yes, tank bags also yes but the range of fabrics, colours, sizes and prices for tail / seat bags is not small....

@Joe Rocket, plan is to visit Normandy (three days), Northern France (stop over) before crossing into Germany (three days) for the Nurburgring then head home via the train thingy (for the experience), maybe next time.

Nice - I'm heading over in May for my second visit.   I'm popping to the ring just for a look on  my way home.  Might even by a wanky sticker :)  If you get chance while you're over that  way I can highly recommend some of the Mosel valley towns - have a look at Trier as an example.

Trier is the oldest town in Germany. I went there in 1974 and can't remember much of it now but did enjoy it, that much I do remember.  :thumb:

Had a pair of Continental trail attack 3 tyres fitted today.
Mobile fitter came to my workplace and had it all done in approx 1hr. He matched the price I was quoted from Protyre which saved me from having to take time out to go to the garage for fitting.
If you're in the Bristol and surrounding areas he's definitely worth contacting for a price.
EMJ bike tyres is the name. (Pretty sure he travels further afield as well, as one of his fb posts said he'd travelled down to Langport to fit some tyres just after xmas).
Back to the tyres themselves, I can't believe the difference new tyres makes to the way the bike handles, (for the better, I might add).
All new to me as this is first set fitted since getting the bike Dec '23.

Today was the first ride of 2025 (think since November) - only 81 miles up and down the M1 but was good to be back out on the bike.

Buzzword, I think your tyre bloke is based in Nailsea. He used to go to the Weston Bike Nights as well.👍

Finally managed the first ride of the year. A run up the A6 to Bakewell (passing through at least a dozen temp traffic lights for roadworks  :groan:) then a left up to Monyash for a late breakfast (not the first of the year ).
The long way home, along the A515 to Sudbury, then a few B roads home.
Only one bike in Matlock Bath when we passed through on the way up but a good few in Monyash.
Photos to prove it happened ......

oops sorry.  :shy: Since I posted it to you I've been home, rinsed the bike off (proper wash tomorrow), had a shower myself & had my tea.  Obviously it was a small one though. What you been hanging about for? I suppose you'll be blaming work getting in the way?

Fitted my Healtech Thunderbox.

Sat Nav, dash cam and a USB lead plugged in. One spare connection left.

I’ve checked that charging through my Optimate lead works fine.

However, I’ve had to plug my dash cam into the USB lead as it won’t work properly plugged directly into the Thunderbox. The Dash Cam lead comes with a relay in the wiring, so I’m guessing that’s the issue as it works fine plugged in using the USB. Instructions say not to remove in line fuses and relays put in by the accessory manufacturer.🤷‍♂️

Overall, I’m impressed how easy it was to do.👍

Isn't that when connected direct to the battery or direct to a 12v output? Hasn't the Thunderbox got a built in relay & fuse?  It shouldn't need two.
However, why not contact the dash cam/thunderbox manufacturers & ask them.

The power lead for the Dash Cam can either be connected directly to the battery, or, via a USB lead into a USB socket.

I’ve been plugging it directly into the USB at the side of my dash. However, when touring I wasn’t confident water wouldn’t get in. Therefore I was hoping to connect the supplied power lead, which does come with an in line relay and a separate in line fuse.
Using this lead plugged into the Thunderbox the camera won’t switch on automatically. When I switched it on manually the cameras wouldn’t come on, and the WiFi wouldn’t work.
Troubleshooting I found out one cause of this could be a lack of power getting through to the cameras.
I’m no expert, but when I reconnected the USB power lead and plugged it into the USB plug running from the Thunderbox, it worked fine.🤷‍♂️

It’s working fine, so that will do me.👍

Phild, yes that's the chap.
He came highly recommended by the folk in the Bristol advanced group. He said he deals mainly with Pirelli and Metzeler but was no problem to sort out a couple of continentals.

Today I went out in the rain to give her a bit of soapy love & got all the grime she picked up yesterday off her.
Trying to dry her in the rain might have been fun but I put her under the car port & used the pet dryer. A great bit of kit IMHO & she went into the garage nice & dry.  :thumb:

Being a tight wad I use the garage vac with the hose in the blow hole ( yes I do empty and clean it out first).
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can. Nothing travels faster than the speed of time.

Parted Company

After 8 and a bit years I've sold my 2016 DL650 XT to a local bloke who's going to use it mostly for commuting.

Looking back aver the records I've kept I see that over 59,000 miles it's gone through 10 sets of tyres.
Average mileage from all tyres has been 5,816 miles. The longest lasting being Bridgestone A41's at 7,126 miles closely followed by A40's at 6,409 miles. Bridgestone BT023's lasted 4,505 but gave the most confidence. Michelin PR5's lasted 5,928 miles but felt horrible from the start. (I used to love them on my SV650s & Aprilia SL1000r)

I now have a V-Strom shaped hole in my shed, which will soon be filled by a pre-registered 73 plate V-Strom.

I looked at various other bikes but kept coming back to the Strom, almost bomb-proof, easyish to work on and decent running costs. I even like the beak.

First ride (or rather, an overnighter) for the year. I got to try out the new gadgets on the bike (Ogio TB2 tailbag, Nelson-Rigg tailbag and Peak Design phone holder).

The Ogio was a bit disappointing. I saw it on a Youtube video where Revzilla was "reviewing" it.

Here is my response to that page regarding my experiences with the Ogio TB2.

Based on this video I lashed out and bought the TB2 to replace an aging Ventura rack system. My first trip with it was over the weekend, away for two days.

Now, the bag itself looks to be decent quality and it accomodated my stuff for an overnighter. But, (there's always a "but", isn't there?), I had some issues with it, particularly with this RAM mount system.

I had problems getting it to latch in properly, often taking 2 or 3 attempts to lock it in place. On the first day's ride (about 6hrs), no problems. But the next morning, on the way home the bag unlatched itself and fell off. I reattached it, again having problems with it locking into place. About 2 hours later I  felt it move around on me (it was on the pillion seat and resting against my back), then at 100 km/h (or around 60 mph) it came off again. Friend following saw it bouncing, stopped to collect it before a following car ran over it. Lucky that nothing  breakable was in the bag.

This time I used cable ties to secure it to the bike.

The design is basicaly good except that I am of the view that the expanding zipper should be BELOW the opening zipper. The bag can take a fair bit of stuff and when you fill it the clothes or whatever you have in it, sit above the closing zipper. I found that when I had to get something out I had to be careful when opening it otherwise stuff would fall out. If the expanding zip was under the opening zip then the bag would be expanded with all the contents still in the bag.

Finally, the bag wobbles around a fair bit as the base plate which you strap down to the seat, frame or whatever, isn't very stable. I wonder if that was causing the bag to detach from the RAM mount.

I'll continue to use it, after all, it can hold my gear for an overnighter and I paid  $260 AUD for it. But I'll ensure that the bag is secured to the bike using bungie straps  (colloquially, here in Australia we call them "ocky" straps or short for octopus straps as the original ones came in a set of 4 straps on a steel ring).
