Good news on your recovery, less good news on the fuel leak.
If it is the same issue as a few of us have had with Vees at a certain age then it's the fuel delivery pipe shown in green below, the red clamps are crimp type and so can't be tightened. After a lot of years (mine failed 2 years ago but fortunately in my 6 month warranty period from the dealer) they fail to seal the short pipe against the fuel pressure and weap (or gush) on start up. They often then seal again after a few minutes but they only get worse sadly. You can see this assembly (just) if you look up from below on either side, best done lying down so maybe recruit an assistant.
It's a pricey part, although others have just replaced the piece of pipe and put injector grade band clammps on, and a lot of tear down to get in there so fingers crossed it's something simpler like the fuel hose directly off the tank pump.
