Fitted a mud flap I made from a 4mm thick sheet of rubber to keep the crud off the rear shock.

Took it for a spin this afternoon in the rain, aiming for cow pats and muddy puddles to test it. Admittedly I should have cleaned the bike first so you could see how clean the shock was after the ride but you'll just have to take my word for it that it worked brilliantly. And it didn't fall off so double bonus!

I have done the same on my KTM, if you extend the chain guard forwards it keeps the crud off the chain.

Any length of 90 degree black plastic angle will do, I used the side from a shredder bin. I'll stick a pic up later.

Checked trip 2 to see how far the trip to Croatia that finished at home at 00:18 on Sunday morning was...3,797 miles

Bike almost faultless, arse a bit numb

Thursday 351 miles, all twisty back roads, Friday 561 miles quite a bit of (terrible) German autobahn, Saturday 692 miles almost all dual. Bless Bev - that's a long way on pillion

Chain ++++ed, went downhill fast in last 1,000 or so miles, like a snake on a electric fence now when wheels turning

At about 25,000 could it be the original? or a crap replacement? Adjusted 3 marks in last three (v long

) days on final mark, wasn't sure it'd get us home. Never had a chain go downhill that fast - usual?

I replaced the bulb in the number-plate light. Straightforward - took the opportunity to run some silicone grease around the cover etc to keep the weather out. Incidentally, don't follow Mr Haynes' instructions - he'll have you removing half the plastics on the bike; it's only two nuts and then two screws to remove!

Saw the odometer go over 50,000 miles today

I also noticed my new camera (front/rear cameras as recommended here) seem to draw a lot more than my previous SJ4000 camera. With the camera, my heated jacket on low, satnav and LED spot lights running, the volt meter was showing between 13.4v and 12.6v at 5,000-5,500 rpm - unplugging the jacket moved it up to 13.4-13.8v. I may unplug the camera later for the ride to Portishead to monitor this more.
(Previously I could run SJ400 camera, Satnav, heated jacket on medium, heated grips and LED spot lights with the volt meter showing around 13.4v)

Aftermarket screen and mirrors fitted. Radiator guard, tank bag and tailpack attached, then out for a quick ride to 'run it in' some more - That Givi AirFlow screen is so fugly... but then again, it is a beaked V-Strom so it wasn't particularly attractive to start with

Thanks.... yes once you come backwards from the screen & beak I really love the look of my new bike. Having come from the 650 (had two from 2013 - 2018) I can feel this 1000 is a keeper. Loving the power, the fact that it has a front brake (650 was rubbish) and the glorious sound coming from the Fuel exhaust.

Rode back from Hants to London after 2 weeks holiday in northern Spain. Hired a Yamaha xmax 400 scooter (biggest thing they had) but missed my bikes. Next time I'll ride down - those roads around Andorra and Northern Spain are stunning.

Fixed a broken earth wire on my K8 DL1000 GT brake light unit, a fiddly job but got it sorted out after an hour's work.

Then rode an enjoyable 40 miles and got a light lunch in Stirling, then onto Falkirk to have a look at Jim Allen's motorcycle shop etc... A great dry day.

My standard heated grips are temperamental and wouldn't work today for some strange reason...??

I had a local company fabricate me some neoprene fork protectors. I went and picked them up today and I’m super pleased with the outcome.
