Fitted a tomtom rider 400 above the clocks, Poked the wire for the cradle through a spare windscreen well nut and ran the wire down the LHS of the tank with - just reached my fuse box.

Ordered a Scala 20s to go with.

Probably the last toy for the v-strom now the tenere plan is coming together!

How do you find the rider 400?
I fancy upgrading but not sure whether to go for an outgoing v5 or newer 400 which seem to have variable reviews.

So far so good, I'm a bit anti-satnav to be honest, previously preferring maps, roadsigns and winging it for the most part - but that can leave me riding a lot of motorways if I don't have the inclination to plan ahead of time. About 50% of my purchase motivation was getting out of that bad habit, the other half was a roughly even split between actual routing features, speed limit nag / camera warning, recreational usage of it's twisty-road finder, and general gadget/customising appeal.

I got the premium kit with a locking mount - installation was a doddle, very easy to operate with heavy gloves. It tells me I've done 240.3 miles (avg of 40mph).

Upgrading the firmware added quite a few features like reordering the homescreen icons.  You can't initiate phone calls from it, but can answer - this wasn't super clear in the marketing gumph.

The desktop software is a bit weak, but you do get a licence for an application called Tyre (which I hadn't previously heard of) this seems pretty featureful for planning longer multi-day trips, the unit itself also has a ride-to-route mode which I imagine will allow a nice balance of planning/playing it by ear.

In the past week it's certainly shown me some new/interesting routes between my common destinations where previously I would have taken A-roads/motorways.

Treated her to a 65 mile birthday blast (just up and down the dual carriageway and a bit of local exploring) as it was today in 2004 that I bought her from George Whites. So now she's 11 years old and I am still very happy with her.

Went to work on the bike. Don't know why I bothered - there was nothing doing so I got a sharp finish with the intention of going for a ride out into the countryside. Just as I was approaching the Tyne Tunnel the oil warning light came on. WTF!? "Please don't break down in here, please don't break down in here, please don't break down in here.....", muttered under my breath all the way through the tunnel.
Stopped at the first layby on the A19, kicked out the sidestand, got off and stuck my helmet on the offside mirror. Need to check the oil level so hoicked it up onto the centre stand which caused my helmet to go bouncing into the traffic  :dl_smiley_banghead: Cue, frantic waving and a near suicidal dash to get it back before it was smashed to pieces.
What a  ### idiot I am.
Anyway, nothing wrong with the oil level so I started the bike, the oil light went off (and stayed off) so I sheepishly trundled home.

The only safe place for a helmet is on the ground. On top of gloves if needs be.

More importantly, do you know why the light came on? Glad you are safe

Blimey JonJo, that was a close one. Glad you survived.

+1 on surviving.

It would be good to know why that light came on though.

You sound rather over dressed for New Years eve in Newcastle, tee shirts and shorts is de rigueur usually. I left my last helmet on the seat once on a very windy day. It didn't end well, I was out of breath by the time I caught it, it blew down a cobbled lane in Hebden Bridge...
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

Thanks for the sympathy but I really should give myself a kick up the backside for being so stupid. But Martin W and grumps both get to the real issue.

Never had this happen before. There's plenty of oil so is it a dodgy sensor, a buggered oil pump or what? Any advice welcome.
Thanks.

Managed to bag another 175 miles between Macclesfield and North Wales dodging showers for the most part. 20 miles on forestry roads ensured the thing was caked in mud.
Then looked like a loon washing it in the rain.

That took me to 2700 miles since purchase in may/June which is disappointingly low but having built my first house and got married this year, I should be glad it has any miles on. I think I have had 7 decent days out on it, everything else has been quick blasts offroad...

Got a lift home with the RAC today, thanks to, of all things, a little stone.

Sharp little bugger, ripped a fair hole in my back tyre.

I'm going to grind it dust.

This morning I started the new year in the garage changing engine oil and filter, brake fluid and coolant liquid before I took a ride in the neighbourhood. This was the last day before the cold weather with ice on the roads will be back in Norway.

A happy new year to all of you!

Not today exactly, but over the Christmas break :

BigPie's Aux Fusebox
USB charging socket
Cigarette lighter socket
Volt meter
Heated grips
SW Motech Hawk fog lights

And a partridge in a pear tree.

Scrubbing in the new rear tyre - got 235 miles from a tank while riding in a spirited manner.

Soon to be resigned to traitors corner - stopped off at a dealer on the way back & put a deposit down on a 2016 super tenere - learning the standard Z model comes with cruise control now was the final push to commit.

Was rather surprised at how little I was offered for PX on my 40k mile `12 glee - I declined, of course, new bike or not I still love the thing.

Bunged on new chain and sprockets. Simple enough you would think but I didn't check the length of the new chain, so although I'd bought it as a bike specific kit, when it came to putting it all back together and after I'd rivetted the ends together I discovered that it was too long. So out with the angle grinder again, grind off newly installed link and a couple off the chain, then a trip up to local bike shop for a new rivet link and do it all over again. Joy of joys!

Put new bushes in the suspension of my aging XT225 ready for the next time I go out and get abused by bobble-hat'd old folk.
