@nigel s, that's ridiculous, no way should that dog still be in his jamas at that time.

Having cleaned the bike a couple of days ago, today it got a coat of ACF50 ready for the winter. Feel it in my bones that we're only a week or so away from the gritters coming out...

I really ought to wear a mask when using the compressor/ACF50 combo as although I was outside, now feel like I've smoked 20.

Picked up a spare LHS heel rubber thanks to Rixington so fitted that and had a little look over the bike. Took the front sprocket cover off and removed all the gunk build up, figured out how to fill the Scottoiler so ordered some oil for it, and discovered that the heated grips on this bike are not wired into the ignition so I'll have to remember to turn them off when I get to work. That said, I may not need them so much now that I have heated gloves.

Re: heated grips, are they maybe the new type "auto-off" ones I've heard about? don't know how they work,  but they seem to be a thing.

Yes, the latest Oxford ones are voltage sensing and turn off automatically if the bike isn't running. They take a few minutes to power down though.

Not sure, they're the same Oxford ones I had on the previous Glee, and they only came on when the ignition was on. These ones are connected directly to the battery via the O connectors and turn on when the bike is off

Ah OK, if they turn on with the bike off then they're the old type.
Perhaps a BigPie aux fuse box is in your future, I can highly recommend as will others, assuming he's still doing them.

I have just fitted a new set of Oxford heated grips, wired straight to the battery with the control unit turning them off when it detects low voltage (engine off). However, you can turn them on even when the ignition and engine are off, they just don’t remain on. I thought I would mention that as your grips may not be that old.

Aaaah OK, I shall experiment and see. I didn't mess around with them for long, just turned them on with the engine off,  then turned them straight off

A re run of yesterday's aborted b road explore to Newmarket.
A partial success, the roads were great..DRY...Wahey, but I did somehow miss Newmarket and ended up nearly in Cambridge before I had to stop for a pee.
That's what you get for following your nose and the fun road, ignoring the satnav.
Oh Well. It will be there for another day.
I had to press the overjacket into action on the way back ( Left the heated jacket at home due to 13c when leaving) the temp dropped sharply .
Not many days like this are left in the year I think.

Got out for about 90 miles in the Peaks today, up to Flash for lunch, weather was predictably, almost comedically abysmal over Staffordshire Moor.
Span into Hartington to buy cheese, out via the gated road to Pilsbury which was rather leafy, muddy and slick in places.  Stopped off at David Mellor Design on the way home as I've always been curious. Interesting place full of beautifully designed things I can neither justify nor afford. Coffee and cake were good though. Back just before dark via a full tank of E5, in case that's it for a bit.

I've done a few runs in the last couple of weeks, but although the scenery, breakfasts and rides have been excellent, the photo count has been very low, so I've not bothered posting... however, the breakfast at The Old Brewery Cafe in Gillingham, Dorset, is very tasty.

Today I was hoping to be out with my mate Leigh. But he owns his own garage and is bloody good at what he does, hence working 10 hour days... every day. So instead of visiting Jolly Roger's in Bovey Tracey as planned, I headed over the Severn Bridge to Chepstow and then over to Raglan, Abergavenny, Crickhowell and onto the A40 up to Brecon and on to Llandovery where I sampled the breakfast at The Owls Nest Cafe... it's ...erm substantial and as I didn't want the black pudding, they gave me some extra bacon instead.  :)

Part two of the ride was into the hills on a single track road that I can't even find a name or number for, but my point of aim was Carreg Clochdy, which is a viewing point that looks out over Llyn Brianne. Form there I headed to a little village called Beulah.

I'm afraid you'll have to google it to find out where it is, but if you are ever in the area... ride it!

The roads are all single track, 45 mph feels like 1000 mph and the views are magnificent. About 2/3rd of the way to Beulah I went down the Devils Straicase. This is, as many Welsh places are, slightly dramatically named as in truth it is two steep hairpin bends, similar to the easy bits of the Hardknott Pass or many others I have come across in Yorkshire or Scotland, but given the surroundings, the views and the fact I seemed to have a whole mountain range entirely to myself... I'll let the Welsh off this time.

End to end the ride was around 30 miles and a little over and hour and a quarter, but had I had the time, I would have happily turned around and ridden back again. What a road!

From Beulah I headed towards Builth Wells on the fast and swoopy A483, which is a smile a minute road when, like today, it is dry and deserted.

From Builth it was back to Crickhowell, another brilliant fun ride with sun, mist and mountains doing their best to distract me from the task of riding... brilliant fun.

Crickhowell back to Abergavenny, to Raglan, down the old road, and back across to Chepstow, the M4, M5 and home just as it was getting dark.

230 miles and my spotlessly clean bike now looks well grubby again.

Oh and in the CP at the Owls Nest was a black 18 plate VStrom... I am shyte at model identification so I'm not sure if it was a 650 or a 1050, but it was a damn site cleaner than mine, so I'd say the rider was local. Also, wonderful to hear a bunch of bikers of my age, chatting away in the CP... in Welsh.

A rare day off from work building boats today.

So a rapid b road run down to Ipswich to look at .....boats

I had to quote for some "side " :icon_wink: work at a yard just under the Orwell bridge.
As well as the boat I was quoting for ( don't tell the boss but sail is my first love , after bikes obviously !) I had a chance to poke around Oytercatcher XXXV, this 52 foot carbon fiber racer won every race it entered bar the fastnet where it came third , a bit of a beast.

Chilly mind , after having a good wander around the yard seeing a few old faces and talking "boat bollocks " ( just like "bike bollocks" but ,  believe it or not , even wetter  :icon_wink: ) for a couple of hours , I was ready to get back on the bike to plug in the heated kit to warm up. Must get me a battery pack, but may put the feelers out and see what Santa brings.

I took a punt on the way back and went a different way ( Framlingham/ Harleston, Caistor St Edmund ,locals will know this route) this is a fast 45/50 miles b road section of the 75 mile route home, full of open corners and early/late at the weekend is a ball , but mid week getting a good clean run at it is hard due to Amazon drivers etc.
Lady luck was with me and the only mobile chicane likely to cause a problem saw me coming and sped up as I approached on a bend,  then moved over with an indicator , so as to give me a clean overtake coming onto a short straight.... MY MAIN MAN.
That got a thumb AND a flash of the hazzards, definitely a biker.

Some interesting rides between the A12 and A143 / A146.  And boats are so much bigger out of the water. I used to sail a 14ft Wanderer out of Harwich. Great fun.  That Orwell bridge is a fine thing.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

I used to live in Fox’s marina just under the Orwell Bridge, had a lovely old Hallberg-Rassey which I adored. Sailed her down to the med and kept her in Port Grimaud… those were the days. The river Orwell is a very petty river with some great twisty roads hugging both sides. Plus head south past my old school (Royal Hospital School) and you hit the river Stour which is even prettier! Nice part of the world  :thumb:
