NICE, Black engine, much better than silver.
I did 77.000 miles on mine, never got to Europe on it though  :thumb:, but I did do Cornwall in a day, slept in a tent in a field and came back home to Norfolk the next day...and it was FUN. Great bikes....Now ..you see you have me thinking...DAMN.
Older and creakier now mind :icon_wink:

I've had my 800RE for 5 months now, and finally got round to giving it a wash today.

Got most of the water out of the nooks and crannies with the leaf blower (I'm sure the neighbours thought I was nuts) just as it started to rain... Will have to give the bodywork a polish and coat or two of wax tomorrow as the forecast is better. Have also got some ACF50 to add to the metalwork, which I've never tried before, so that will be interesting.

Nigel s, if you like Fazers but fancy something a bit wilder than a Gen1 have a look at the Gen2. Sure it's not as comfortable over long distance but it's much more sport oriented with better handling and a good top end rush, I really loved mine, all the things I didn't like about the Gen1, mostly the high speed handling, where fixed in the 2.

porter ,
I had one of those too
Full yoshi exhaust,
opened airbox,
Custom Reflashed with the secondary butterflies removed,
R6  quick action throttle tube,
Custom MCT fork cartridge kit , Nitron shock.
Custom  tall seat,
Rack with custom fitted (with lockable bag) Rotopax fuel can to give 160 mile range before light. ( usually 110 before light )
Hell braided hoses,
Madstad bracket and sport screen,
One tooth less on the front, but rev ceiling raised to 12,000rpm ( like R1 donor ) on reflash meant 160mph plus  and 85 mph power wheelies :icon_wink:
2" risers to match the 2" higher seat, R6 pegs
SOOO comfy, handled easy and fast as F...

Dynoed at 140bhp, with a HUGE mid range.
Did 66.000 miles on it .

Still preferred the gen 1

Started to rebuild the clutch side front caliper. Managed to get the dust seals out without too much effort by pulling them out around the pistons. Unfortunately I had to stop to do Saturday taxi services so will be finishing it tomorrow.

I think we need a Fazer appreciation sub topic. Fantastic bikes. Here's a pic of the 650 I used to have before it was replaced by the Strom (via a Honda SH300i)

Had one of those also UK_vstrom650 but in red and the later model with the different headlights in silver.
Nigel s, had similar engine mods done to mine but only got 138hp, friend was an Ohlins dealer so suspension was sorted. My wife didn't like the pillion so I went the adventure route, wonder if my now 15 year older bones would let me go back!

MilozFolly,
Good call,
The H&B site doesn't list them for past '11 650s, which is odd ( probably do them though ), but that is what they looked like. :thumb:
porter,
Removing the secondaries made the biggest difference to the midrange, which was what I was after, as std yamaha decided to only let them fully open past 7500 rpm
Kind of makes me wonder if the stroms are the same in some way?
When I am done with the warranty I may have a word with Track Electronics (dyno/reflash specialists near me) and see what they say, though I suspect not many strom owners have gone down that route so he may have no experience of them

Sorry to pull the  forum back onto the subject of VStroms, but.

I had an AGM to attend in Newton Abbot yesterday, and the weather was forecast good so... off the AGM down the motorway, and business concluded it was time to head home.

I did more or less the same ride last year, but it rained as soon as I got to Exmoor, so I couldn't 'appreciate' the roads in quite the same way, also, the roads were MUCH quieter this year.

Out of the Heathfield business estate, turn right and headed for Mortonhampstead, straight past Jolly Roger's, usually a must stop. Just outside NA I found a place to stop for a quick sarnie and a flask of coffee, almost no traffic passed, but as I was just finishing my coffee, two 'lads' in black two piece leathers on Hondakawazukiaha four cylinder thousands shot past and gave me a thumbs up.

Up onto the edge of Dartmoor and headed to Chagford. This is a fast bendy road and it didn't take long to catch up the one or two slow locals OAP's. With them dealt with politely I now found myself approaching the back of a four car, two bike queue. I stuck with it for a mile or so, but it was clear the 'lads' were not brave... fair enough, we each ride our own ride, so as soon as it was safe I went. I short spell behind the lead car and that was that and I had the road completely to myself for a few miles.

Not far from my next turn there is a long dead straight road, when on these fast A roads with nothing in front and the sun shining, I just roll along at 60 ish, I've another two hours of riding yet, so no need to make good progress. Half way down the straight, the 'lads' came past. At the end of the straight are a series of wriggles, they were all brake lights and nose dives so I was soon with them again. At the next roundabout they turned left and I turned right... bye!

I'll not give a blow by blow, but I headed to Copplestone then across country to a village called Black Dog. This called for five miles of single track, which was slower but great fun... until I came across a bloke in an estate car. He was doing his own thing with his missus in the passengers seat and as soon as I came up behind him I knew he was not going to let me past. A couple of miles later the single track widened just enough and I was past.

Onto another A road and into Tiverton. This is were I got tail gated at 60 ish by a young girl driving an MG SUV. Why do they do it? She got uncomfortably close a couple of times, and any attempt to shake her off with a bit of speed just meant I was being tailgated on an A road at 75! I was saved by some slower traffic, that I passed easily, although it was quite good fun cracking along to keep the MG off my tail.... and yes, I could always have let her past.

From Tiverton I dived onto my old friend the A396, it was wet in places and some of the surfaces have broken up already... they were great this summer. I stuck with it until I got to Wheddon Cross where I took a right and headed across towards Raleigh Cross, the Quantock Hills and Bishops Lydeard. The views down over to the Bristol Channel, Watchet and Wales were absolutely superb. I love riding in Autumn.

At Bridgwater I hopped on the motorway and was home by 5 pm, 200 miles on the clock.
The older I get, the better I was.

Single digit temps this morning reminded me to use my thick socks for a ride across 3 counties.
Norfolk/ Suffolk/ back to norfolk........that counts ..maybe :icon_wink:
Coming back from Yoxford, about 150 miles in and all b roads so far, I decided to blow off  going on the A12 ( the quickest way home but so boring it sets my teeth on edge ) and set the Sat Nav to straight line mode to see if I can find my way back on the byways.
As the crow flies I was 35 miles from home...that , on the road is bullshit, due to having to cross the River Yare at some point but what the hell..
I spent an hour on grass up the middle "roads " slowly meandering my way home.
Mud everywhere due to the sugarbeet being lifted ,so I had to be on my toes (almost literally sometimes ) to plough on through the shart.
An old bloke in a Tesla was doing his best to annoy me , 20 mph and not one indication for 10 mins ( he was not hesitant at junctions so I think he knew where he was going, more than could be said for me anyway) . He may have been running out of battery, don't know?
I did have to backtrack once, the road petered out into a part of the cycle way route through East Anglia, I thought about it...but Nah.Everyone has a camera on their phones these days :icon_wink:
Finally popped out near Norwich, crossed the river and rode the last bit home.
All Good :thumb:

"thick socks" the man says. While getting my gear ready last night for today's Saltburn sortie I realised my old feet had spread so much I couldn't get my boots on with thick socks. Bugger! Set off in 3 degree chill with very thin thermal socks on. Wind chill factor is fun.

You need some heated insoles Rusty. Just don't forger to add a switch otherwise it gets a bit too warm...

Finished the caliper rebuild today. The amount of crud behind the dust seals  :icon_no:  Today's made me think I really should invest in that ultrasonic cleaner I keep looking at as it took FOREVER to clean those calipers.
I almost thought of just doing the clutch side given that was the one with the popped seals, but decided to do both and a good job I did as they throttle pistons wouldn't come out. Eventually the compressor worked it's magic and forced the pistons and dust seals out, and that one was just as bad.
All refilled and bled, but I'm not convinced it's all good as the lever stays firm when bleeding but goes a bit softer when left for a period but then firms up again once pulled a couple of times.
Have left it cable tied back overnight on the side stand to see if that helps (has in the past), then will take it for a short ride get the fluid moving and reassess.

 UK_Vstrom650, bit late now ...I know :icon_no:
I got some of these  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/395136897891 as recommended by an inmate on here ( sorry, don't remember who, but ta  for the good call) recently used them servicing the rear caliper and they did make life easier :thumb: Though I did have to clean and reglue the plastic sleeves on the handles back on, but allgood now.

Rusty, I have always had a problem due to super wide feet, but can recommend Forma Adventure boots, loads of space in the toe box for extra sockage and that all important air gap. Took a bit of breaking in but super comfy now.I see they have gone down in price now since I got mine too... typical :icon_wink:

Thanks Nigel. I do have a set of those piston pliers but they wouldn't budge them until after I managed to remove the dust seals.

One thing I did notice when rebuilding the calipers is when I replaced two pistons previously, the Suzuki replacements are different to the OEM ones and sit further back into the caliper body - of course I only noticed this after putting one in each caliper so that tool was used to remove them to ensure matching pistons on each side.  :thumb:

Zero miles today due to a number of things , P*ssing down being one of them. Attacked the 650 with a can of GT85 and a handful of old towel and reapplied a generous coat of ACF 50.
All set for when the rain F*cks off.

To be fair, today was not a bad day for it to rain and get it out of the way , there can only be so much rain....right . I had to wait for Duh Man to deliver Duh new washing machine and the Immersion heater I replaced a week or two ago was leaking slightly at the drain valve ( MT type b COCK valve  ..phnarr ..  :icon_wink:) and is a total ball ache to replace.

So that and taking out/replacing the washing machine and fettling on the bike means it is now beer o'clock.

No riding but managed to get some time in the garage. Fitted some Auxiliary lights that can shine either yellow or white. I believe and hope that having French style yellow lights will make me more visible during the day, then switch to white at night for better visibility (unless it’s foggy).

The best part was the price. I did a lot of research and wanted something good. I couldn’t justify £200+ on Denali lights so had a look on AliExpress. Found these for £32 which included taxes and delivery. They took 6 days to arrive and the quality is exceptional, all metal and even the bolts are actual A2 stainless and not cheese. Really impressed, just hope they last but I think they will. Link below if anyone is interested, they have gone up in price a little but still good value.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005007045557396.html

Fully plug and play. They come with a lovely aluminium and rubber switch and the relay unit means no playing with wiring, just connect to the battery directly and off you go. The relay will only allow the lights on with the ignition, very clever and all with waterproof connectors.

I'm sure the yellow will make you more noticeable amongst a sea of very bright, very white led lamps that even push bikes are using these days. A moving yellow light amongst that lot should register with everyone except the determined text&drive numpties.
Are they really 100w per pair? Seems a lot for led.

They are very, very bright! I have them aimed at the floor as they might be too bright, not sure if 100W but they might be. They are certainly brighter than the eBay LED ones I had on my old bike and they were great at night. I find my headlight on the 1050 a bit crap, it doesn’t light the verges at all so hopefully these will. The main aim was yellow during the day, so fed up of not being seen.
