Nice long trip today, had a little adventure round before heading home after a short camping trip in Wales. After not doing a lot of mileage last year, I think I've beaten the entire years mileage so far and we're only in May. Definitely becoming much much more confident with the bike and what it can do, even loaded up with luggage (albeit not that heavy, but would have definitely added some wind resistance).

It pished it down on Friday, and getting back today, noticed there was some grimey crud around my fork dust seals and up the forks. Wiped it off, doesn't smell oily at all... Popped the dust seals off, and above the oil seal is full of water and gunky dirty mess, wiped off and water/gunk mopped up, seals refitted, and I'm now only left with a very faint ring where the dust seal gets to. I think this is actually forming in the XCP, maybe with the remnants of water inside the dust seal, rather than a fork oil leak, but will keep an eye on it.

Unfortunately with the wet riding my squeaky brakes have returned, and my sticky throttle. The latter I have tightened the pull cable slightly which fixed that (don't understand why that fixed it, but Hello ho). The brakes I will have a look at/clean (again!) next week when I have some more time to myself... might even treat myself to some new, known name brake pads

I was looking at those, did hear that they're not great initially until they warm up (and are harsh on discs), but I'll take anything that stops the bloody squealing

Probably won't help with squeeling, that's pistons or sliders or pad edges sticking in calipers.I had ebc hh on my fazer 1000 for 70,000 miles on original discs,I imagine strom would be OK too, no warming up needed.See my post in sv1000 caliper upgrade for bedding in.
I'm assuming you have kept the anti squeel pad backs?

I had this squeal before, took the pads out and gave the disc a good clean (and brushed the surface of the pads with a brass brush following Haynes). That seemed to fix it for 100+ miles, only really started squealing again after the wet ride. Might also be a coincidence. The discs look OK with no grooves or anything you can feel the edge of. Discs are 4.7mm each side.

Have ordered some new EBC HH pads, and will keep my eye out for the shims, I know the springs were there, but I can't recall from memory if I saw anything on the back of the pads.

On the back of the original pads is a copper shim clipped to it ,it's easily missed and discarded . This is the anti squeal shim and should be taken off and put on new pads.
Also check out Dr v strom on you tube he has a vid on this it's all good advice.

I attempted to take off the side panels - this wasn’t a success! Watched a couple of videos- do I need to take the front under headlight plastic off before the side panels ?

I can’t speak for later generations, but for the first generation 650 you do need to remove the black plastic inner fairing under the headlight, it has clips that lock to the side panels  :)

Sadly not, although an essence of VSTROM room purification device must be a winner. It's a rodent deterrent device, one of two. We're pretty remote and it's very common to see mice, voles and rats etc in the vicinity.
Ask me if they work? Go on!
don't know......but I've never had rodent damage to vehicles in the garage. What have I said.....
As an aside the air filter (not the reason for caboom) was shitty. Gave it a blow out with an airline, couldn't really believe how much crap was in there, probably because of the front intake location?
Or is it the mice  :icon_batterup:

Removed rear brake disc in a wait for new one. I had an unfortunate event of ride off with disc lock attached, simply forgot about it :( Disc bent. Bought Tourmax replacement, hopefully it is not some cheap Chinese. Even if it is, will have to suffice for a while..... Can't afford any better now.
