What have you done with your V-Strom today?
« on: February 27, 2012, 11:05:56 »
Fitted some Nissin brake calipers from a CBR600 using SV Racing brackets on Saturday (so no technically today...) Also put some new EBC HH pads in them. Doesn't make as much difference as I expected, but I put most of that down to my terrible brake hoses. Even with the bad brake hoses I have better feel from the brakes now. A good squeeze is worth more than it was before so I have high hopes when I get the hoses replaced too. With that in mind I also measured up the current brake hoses to get better ones made up this week. Somewhere along the lines I measured something wrong because the numbers doesn't look right, I will have to redo it. I'm going use a 2 hose from the master cylinder, one to each caliper, setup.

Thanks for the trade for the calipers Hutchie :thumb:

Do you mind keeping a hold of the measurements etc?  I'll copy you at my next service (or earlier) as my hoses need doing.

Oh... and I have done an oil and filter change.  Put some Castrol Power 1 Racing Fully synth in.  It's red!

I have been a boy on Saturday:
wash and dry
wipe rust from the sides of the chain
lubricate all hardware affected by the road salt
replace longer "dog bones" with the original ones, lubricate suspension bearings
adjust the chain and align it correctly
drop the drop the front (raise the forks) by 15mm
remove muffs - expecting a heatwave
adjusted suspension preload front and rear

Checked all fluid levels
Checked tyre pressure, tread and condition
looked at the chain, nicely lubed by the oiler
Looked at the mounted 3cs, tried to work out the powerlet wiring route
I'm sane, honestly. . . I got a certificate to prove it!

Yep Strommer, will keep the measurements on record. I'll PM them to you once I have made sure they are correct (if I remember...) It's difficult to get an accurate measurement. I took some rope and put it along the hose, moving along at small intervals, and then measured the rope afterwards (used nylon rope that doesn't stretch much.) I think I wrote one measurement down completely wrong.

I've just fitted my spanking new Wilbers shock, looks a thing of engineering beauty. Thankfully not much of a drama to change either, which is nice.

Sadly just bounced on it in the garage, with a bit of luck I'll be out at the weekend. This could be a nice answer for a shock replacement as it's between the Hagon and just about everything else price wise.

Topped up scottoiler, cleaned oily goo off rear wheel. Wired up a relay to power Satnav, fitted and wired up satnav mount.
Used a telescopic magnet to fish odd nut from inside fairing/ bodywork.
Spent ages freeing off siezed centre stand.
Spent more time wondering where nut in fairing came from.  Can't find nutless bolt anywhere.
Thinking about MOT tomorrow  Hmmmmm ..  other posts remind me to check tyre pressures.
I haven't got a bike MOT'd since the seventies as I have always traded in within three years so if anyone knows of common fail problems I'd be obliged for some tips.

Does it still count if the garage did something to the Strom today ?  :fix:

Duques Garage fitted my Garmin Zumo 220 -  :lala: - powers off when you turn the ignition key off - using the powers of the dark art of electricity in there somewhere  :icon-mrgreen:

Shees! Some people have really been busy.

For the MOT, check brake pads properly and make sure the fluid level is high enough.

Juvecu - brake pads, oh! yes, I will check and hope they're OK and I haven't left it too late.
thanks

Is it just me that feels waiting for an MOT result is like a new dad outside the labour ward !!!

Dave

PS wee was MOT'd OK. Only an advisory that the rear pads were wearing unevenly indicating the caliper is not sliding as it should and may need lubrication.

I have ordered new pads and some lube.

Strom has been washed and I've attended to the rust problem on the chain after this winter!

The track bike has also been attended to though, rear wheel off and front to be taken off tomorrow with a bit of help. (seems to be stuck so getting someone more mechanically minded to help).

Brakes have bedded in nicely now and the last air is out of the system after it getting some use. Much improved compared to standard. Will probably measure that hose tonight and see if I can get the brake hoses on order soon.
