Rear tyre puncture repair effective rubber plug?
« on: August 07, 2011, 08:33:55 »
I found my rear tyre on my Wee was 7 psi before I took it out for a short ride out!

When I checked it had a  large steel nail in the middle and I pumped it up and rang a nearby bike shop.

They took it in immediately and put a rubber plug in the tyre (it was in the middle and a fairly new tyre only 12 months old a ''Bridgestone Battlewing'' ).

Is this method of repair effective? The bike shop explained how they do it & said it's a good method.

They charged me £30 for the work done. Is that about right?

I was well pleased they fitted me in immediately on a Friday afternoon.  Interested in others experiences.

It should be fine, I had a tyre plugged about 3000 miles ago and it's never been an issue.

Plugs are fine and I think you are allowed one more plug repair (legally) on the same tyre. Gawd know's where I dreamt that up from, so it may be inaccurate ? I'm sure I read it in a bike mag somewhere or maybe I'm just talking/typing bollocks, it wouldn't be the first time... I also seem to remember reading 'Z' rated tyres can't be repaired at all ? Perhaps a tyre guru can clarify ?

A main dealer not far from me charges £45 to plug a tyre ! My small local bike shop who I've known for years charges £20 ..I think it depends on their overheads etc and hourly rate ..Would say £30 is about right..

Thanks all.

Yes, on balance £30 seems all right I suppose, BUT  Â£20 would have been better !

The mechanic explained how the plug works and to be fair it sounds a good reliable solution, which saves me replacing a perfectly good tyre.

Don't get many punctures, I think I was taking it down this farm track which did for me! I will go on these mini adventures on my adventure tourer  :shy:  :shy:  :shy:

It's still much too clean to be called an adventure tourer :neen:

Juvecu,

sadly you are ABSOLUTELY RIGHT! it is just far TOO clean for a real rufty tufty adventure tourer!

I think I've got OCD about my bike; I have cleaned and scrubbed and polished that beast since I got her in May.

Having been Slimed by the AA, who I called out for a puncture, and whilst getting my now fckd up tyre replaced at great expense I spoke to the bike shop about tyre repairs.  I was told that up to 2 repairs (mushroom from the inside) to a tyre is allowed - but certainly not recommended in the front.  Seems fair enough, not sure I'd want two fixes to a front.
