Digital Camera Recommendations?
« on: October 06, 2010, 19:29:31 »
Recommendations  please. I am looking for a small pocket sized Digital Camera to take out when on the Bike. I currently use my phone but that has varied results.

So, I suppose I am looking for something reasonably well built, not too expensive, as the chance for loss/damage is higher than normal, something that performs well even when operated by a buffoon.

I have an Olympus mju850 (8 mega pixel), waterproof and shockproof and ideal to stick in Your pocket. The little buggers proved to be virtually unbreakable despite being dropped several times. It takes decent pictures and is way better than a phonecam, but not as good as my Panasonic Lumix TZ10, but it is much smaller and lighter. Good battery life and so easy to use - no need to open the instruction manual, not that we blokes would, of course. The range starts from about £70 and goes up to silly  :thumb:

I would recommend one of the Lumix range

Superb build quality, top Electronics & lenses by Leica - not the cheapest but I think the best

Yeah, can only say the panasonic lumix gear is very good for me, not sure about the casio in the photo - its turned a perfectly good Honda into some owld british bike!  :thumb:

I have got a Sony A330 DSLR, Ricoh CX1 and Canon Ixus 100 - the Ixus gets the most use because its titchy but takes great pics. If you want to check out a camera look for its user group on Flickr.

+1 for the Lumix, If your not that bothered have a look in the likes of PC World for the end of range, or older models with a few million pixels less. You can get a good camera for £70 or so and really what's the difference between 8 and 11 million  in terms of picture quality

Bear in mind that when you decide on your camera it doesn't need to have 10 million plus pixels. A 3.1 is fine for standard 6x4 prints. Pixels only count when you want to blow the picture up to more than 6x4 to say A4 and above.
If you can afford it a canon eos 1000 digital slr is great buy with 10mp and you can buy other lenses off eBay at reasonable prices. The cameraat the mo in Argos is £349 including a decent lense. It will fit a tankbag or your top box. It takes 3 frames per secon & allows your creative Side to flow. It also uses sd cards which are reletiely cheap. http://Www.mymemory.co.uk. They are quick to deliver and very reliable based in jersey. (my friends wife bought him one on my recommendation & he is over the moon. With it.)
My wife owns a pocket size samsung camera which takes superb Images which would rival the eos 1000.cost approx £79 from currys.
Bikes owned.DL1000 k2 vario screen, Heated grips, Givi Top box & scotoiler.Heart broken when she was written off. Triumph Tiger 1050 SE Matt Grey/Black. Panniers heated Grips, centre stand, side stand, touring screen. Based somewhere in Dagenham

Canon A1100is for me, great little compact, which also as a view finder, not many compacts do these days.

Think I paid about £120.00 from a site called buyacamera

I've got a Lumiz TZ3 which is nearly 4 years old and still fantastic. Go for a TZ10, with its good wide angle lens and large screen.

I hang out on www.steves digicams.com for all things camera wise as I needed to update my present camera (kodak dc4800 3.1mp)got a canon g11 after reading the reviews.having used this on my recent trip round europe in june and september this year, taking photos of aircraft cockpits and armour interiors was a doodle as the g11 has a fully moving lcd screen.
