2012 DL650 Oil pressure guage
« on: January 07, 2025, 21:08:37 »
Has anyone fitted an oil pressure gauge to a 2012 DL650, or seen anything that could work.

As these bikes have great engines that sound like a bag of nuts under load, it would be nice to see the oil pressure is okay.

Next time you change the filter, cut it open and check for metal fragments. If it's clean you can stop worrying.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can. Nothing travels faster than the speed of time.

They have the oil pressure light on the instrument panel that comes on and stays on if the oil pressure is low.
The service manual has a section on how to test it* if you're worried, but I wouldn't worry too much about it as the engines are bulletproof. Just keep the oil towards the upper level of the sight glass.

(*I imagine that's where you'd take the feed from if you did want to add a second oil pressure gauge? Though someone more knowledgeable will no doubt correct me)

Adding an OPG introduces a number of joints and additions to the oiling system which increases the opportunity for a failure. As you are measuring the full pressure side a failure could be catastrophic for your engine. If your OPG circuit had a sudden joint failure I suppose you could spot the moment of destruction if you happened to be looking but I think the bright red LED already there might be more easily spotted.

I once fitted an OPG to a Triumph T140ES after a near terminal oil pump failure. I never stopped worrying about the pressure it read or the possibility of a joint failing!!

What is the thread pitch of the bolt were an oil pressure tester is connected.
