sloppy linkage
« on: October 01, 2021, 19:22:39 »
2017 vstrom 650. I have slop in my gear change linkage. it is in the socket that fits on to the ball on the foot lever. can't seem to find the part listed on various websites so asking if anyone has had this and how did it get resolved or do I have to buy the whole shooting match? thanks for any opinions.

Is this any hep? Robinsons Foundry website. The site only goes up to 2010 models but they will have or get parts for the later models.

If it's like the L2 I think those ( cheap ) rose "type" joints are peened on to their respective parts and not individually replaceable. Are you sure it isn't wear in the gear change lever itself and/or the stud it pivots on? Mine and others seemed to suffer badly with wear, which made everything feel loose.

thanks blokes, I had already looked at robinson's site. it is just the rose joint part that is sloppy. it looks like I need to order the lever to get the bit I need. that is tough on an aberdonian. :groan:

Fowlers has more parts diagrams. Look on eBay as you'll find second hand ones that might be better...
Like Rusty says, mine was play in the gear lever pivot that attaches to the frame, which made it all seem sloppy.

I'm finding the gear shift needs a lot of force lately, very hard to find neutral, was always easy before.
Think it might be wear in the little rubber boot covered ball joints etc in the linkage, I have foot peg lowering blocks fitted and I suppose that doesn't help.
I'd like to replace the whole linkage or at least those ball joints to see if that fixes the problem, having trouble finding the part numbers etc.

Thanks Nigel, I just tried rolling the bike back and forwards in first gear and it's very difficult to move (clutch pulled in of course)
in neutral its very easy to move so my clutch cable needs adjusted at least.
Now I'll give that a try and see if it improves the gear shifting and finding neutral, the gearbox on this bike has always been perfect and very easy to shift.

When cold there will be some clutch drag without the engine running ,even with the lever in. As well as adjustment at the lever , there is an adjustment on the actuator on the engine/clutch itself.
I believe yours is different to the actuator on mine so can't give any advice on that, but someone on here will know  :thumb:
If buying used, the rubber on the lever end can give a clue to how worn the linkage is.

Edit,  found this,

But there is more using the search button up top.

I am at 30k now , still very good gearchange wise.
I do preload the lever, thus taking out the slack, before dipping the clutch, that has helped on other more worn out bikes I have had. It has remained a habit, maybe give that a go
I also have a scottoiler which does mean the linkages/pivot  always have a coat of oil so have never seized

Well problem solved, turned out my clutch cable was just hanging on for dear life when I removed the handguard, it was a miracle it hadn't snapped to be honest,
new cable fitted and adjusted properly and the gear shifting is perfect again, it was nothing to do with the linkage being worn, but I lubed that all up anyway so that's it sorted,
must remember to oil the clutch cable and grease round where the lever pivots at least once a year in future.

Sorted  :thumb:
But most  o/g clutch cables are nylon lined and need no oil,so even less to do :icon_wink:

My sloppy linkage is all mileage related and the amount of gear changes after 150,000 km of use.
Despite regular greasing the gear lever bronze bush has worn too much and I will have to make a new one at Mens Shed on the lathe.

The lever on my 1000 is very sloppy also, brass bush worn, I was able to fit a thin washer between the lever and the clip which helped a bit.
