Handlebar risers
« on: August 05, 2024, 08:48:41 »
Morning.
I recently changed from a Multistrada 1200 to a 2016 Vstrom 1000.
Yesterday I rode the Strom for about 4 hours, and noticed some strain in my hips and shoulders
that I did not get on the Ducati.
I'm 6 foot and about 90 kilos, so not a oversize bloke at all.

I'm thinking it may need the bars lifting, and the footpegs dropping a bit.

Any thoughts and recommendations will be really helpful.

Cheers

See https://www.cymarcbikeparts.co.uk/ for the foot peg lowering kit, he is a long-term friend of the site.

Someone with your year bike will be along to give advice on how much you can lift the bars without affecting cables etc.

It almost feels as if I am reaching too far to the handlebars, putting a bit of strain between the shoulder blades. I'm thinking raising the bars and tipping them back a bit might help.

Mzungu, I have just given 3 sets of risers to a member yesterday, to try. If any set are suitable for him he will return the others, you are welcome to try & keep any that you may think suitable. It may be a few days before I have them back though.
I am from just outside Derby & happy to meet at a cafĂ© suitable to both of us for for an exchange. Bar risers for a black coffee.

I've SW Motech  25mm straight risers on my 2014 thou, fit no trouble.  Also had a cheap Ebay set of 25mm up, 20mm back and they fitted OK also but tighter on the brake line.
Footrest lowering plates drop the  pegs 25mm which helps but if you like the corners be careful. A tall seat also helps but you'd need to be 5'11 minimum as its tall on an already top heavy bike.

I'm the same height/weight as yo. I have fitted bar risers which are 1" higher and 1.5"back. they seem to do the job. I also fitted Cymarc peg lowering kit to ease my knees, I can certainly reccomend  them.

Mzungu, the risers I have are available now.
It's just a matter of arranging a meeting place. Can I suggest CMC Motorcycles, Clay Cross.
I'm available most days & times so I'll let you have first choice.  :thumb:

Mzungu, have you tried rolling the handlebar towards you?  First mark the current position, then lift the small screw caps / trim free using a blade, slack off the 4 handlebar mounting bolts and pull the handlebar towards you. Finally retighten the handlebar mounting bolts, reset your mirrors, your clutch and front brake lever position and go for a test ride.
If readjusting the handlebar position doesn't help you, it is easy to restore to the original position and the next step would be experimenting with different handlebar riser heights.  Either way the handlebar mounting bolt caps have to come off, if rotating the handlebars or fitting handle bar raisers.
