Handlebar Starter Switch intermittent
« on: September 01, 2023, 16:08:07 »
Hi DL1000 K5 has a Handlebar Starter Switch intermittent problem, even though the battery is fully charged as on trickle charge when attempting to start today, there was no life, headlight went off as usually when attempting to start, but all I heard was a click, did this several times and on the 5th attempt it started and didn't have another issue all day, any thoughts peeps?

Regards
Al

Stripping and cleaning the starter switch and clutch interlock are a good start and relatively easy to do. Beyond that the main starter relay under the seat is also a pretty easy open and clean. Beyond that you're into main battery earths and starter motors which are bigger jobs so I'd suggest start with the starter button, clutch and relay and see if any of them help.
I had the same issue but no click when pressing the starter button, cleaned it out, greased and re-assembled. Bulletproof every time since.

* Take note of the parts order and the routing for the killswitch when opening the switch gear. It's a simple enough job (10-15mins maybe) but the re-assembly is fiddly.

Personally I'd go straight to the battery connections & earth connection. Didn't this model have a problem with the earth on the engine connection?
Then to the starter motor.

Starter switch would be first thing to go to, if not, then check ground.
