2019 gear indicator problem
« on: July 03, 2021, 16:52:12 »
Cleaned the ride the other week  (not something I normally do).
Ever since when I am in first gear at traffic lights the gear indicator keeps flashing between 1 and 2 even though I know it's in first gear.
Is it just a dodgy switch? If so is it an easy fix.?. Cheers peeps.

Did a little research and it appears Suzuki have replaced GP sensors under warranty on other models so maybe yours is having an issue.

How long is your warranty ?

See if it goes away...
If it's like the glee, there's a connector just behind the frame above the front sprocket. Might be worth cleaning it out?

That's how he arrived in this mess.

Honestly this will set him back years.

I can hear him now. " I told you guvner, cleaning is bad. Jellied Eels and a nice pearly whistle and flute will do me".

My 2015 AL4 has just started doing this (+30k miles) and I have to admit it doesn't bother me, as like oyu said, I'm stationary anyway...

I had an R1200GS some years ago which a dealer very helpfully pressure washed after servicing, filling the GP sensor with water and making it send random messages to the dash. Liberal spraying of the sensor with WD40 sorted it out. Since then, I've never allowed any of my bikes to be pressure washed.

On the Suzuki Facebook page someone just put this on.   Seems like it may help…..

“Well chuffed - gear indicator working again!

Waiting for the rain to stop, I decided to see if I could figure out why the gear indicator on my 2013 DL650 did not show anymore or was very intermittent.

Googling and YouTube did not turn up a lot, but I did find one YouTube video in Spanish (I did not understand a word, but video made sense).

So I went in to take a look / see if I could solve it (as a replacement sensor is something like £130).

Whipped off the sprocket cover (3x 4mm Allen screws) and then unscrewed the sensor (use a good quality 4mm Allen key for this as the two screws have thread lock on and were tight until started off - the one in the toolkit actually seems OK for this).

I used a spray contact cleaner rather than wd40 used in the video and spun the sensor wheel back and forth / round and round several times, cleaning out anything in there with the contact cleaner every few turns.

Put it all back together (note there is an o-ring between the sensor and casing so don’t lose that).  I decided not to use any new thread locker as it seemed to go back quite secure and I wanted to be able to open it up easily again if required in the future.

Gear indicator now works perfectly again and cost me literally nothing. 😊

I hope this may help someone else if they experience the same problem”
