Headlights not working
« on: July 31, 2023, 21:11:04 »
Hello folks
Can someone assist with the location of the fuse block for the headlights as I just noticed they’ve stopped working.
Only got sidelights.
Thanks in advance.
It’s a 650 from 2010

Can we presume you have tested the bulbs?
If so then it could be the contacts in the starter switch, they can burn out with the 8 amps of current flashing across them every time you start the bike. There should be a small drain hole under the switch gear that you can get a straw from a tin of contact cleaner (WD40 at a push) into to spray the contacts & see if that sorts it. It may only be a temporary fix if it does though.
If that doesn't work then have a look at these two links...........

Sorry, to answer your question.... if you lift the lid on the box marked 'Fuse' it will be a blue 15amp one in there.

Let us know what you find, where the fault was, how you fixed it etc.
All good for future reference.   :thumb:

Cleaned the headlight fuse sockets  with contact cleaner.
Started bike and headlights came on.
Stopped engine
Started engine again (no headlights).
Frustration!
For some unknown reason I then pressed the starter button whilst the engine was already running and headlights came back on….
Been working OK so far since

Certainly not guaranteed but on & off, off & on when you press the starter button? It would be the place I go to next.  :thumb:

Flatten the one end of a spray can pipe, stick it in the nozzle of a can of contact cleaner.Leave the ignition OFF.Give the small slot down the side of the
starter button and kill switch a generous squirt, then move the starter button and kill switch on and off for about a minuite .Then give it another one to wash out the junk you have cleaned off the contacts. Then leave it for an hour to dry out before you try it.Use a generous piece of cloth below it to keep the spill off the bodywork.

Stripping, cleaning and lightly greasing the contacts inside the starter is not a difficult job, just take note of the order parts come out and it's really quite simple.
If you've got a corroded contact on the starter button itself then your intermittent headlights may soon be accompanied by intermittent starting which is rather more annoying.

A start switch maintenance guide that I think is worth looking at, https://blacklabadventures.com/2012/02/19/start-switch-maintenance/

I suspect that this is actually the connector just behind the top of the radiator/under the airbox, on the l/h side.

I have sprayed through the tiny hole with switch cleaner ( I failed to spot it before due to ineptitude). Headlights working more reliably now - as ever thanks to all who suggested potential resolutions- much appreciated

It's great that you've got them sorted. However it may not be a permanent fix. The 8 amps across the contacts creates an arc that the contacts cannot cope with & may be burning out. Headlight relays like these https://www.easternbeaver.com/Main/Bike_Specific/VStrom/H4KITS/h4kits.html
will stop it happening as the only current going through the switch is to operate the relay. The headlights are then fed straight from the battery.

Spot on Barbel Mick - common issue. I'd just add that a strategically placed catcher towel or something under the handlebar switch before you start stripping - just in case ...
