Spacer between bearings in front and rear wheels
« on: March 05, 2023, 04:53:25 »
What is the point of the spacer in between bearings in both wheels?? Thanks to that bloody spacer I was unable to use any bearings extractor to pull the bearings out. Gave up and went to the garage....

To prevent excess side load on the inner races, I believe.

As stated, it prevents side load.
You have to remove the correct side bearing first, the spacer will move far enough to drift the bearing out using a long rod or even a screwdriver but you'll get nowhere on the one the other side. The rear is the same.
If you look at the workshop manual there's also a correct order to insert the new bearings, the first is driven until it hits the rim, the second is only driven until it snugs that spacer tube and should be fractionally away from the bottom of the recess in the rim.

No not just you. Many years ago my brother fitted new rear wheel bearings to his GSX750ESD and never put the spacer back in. Then headed to Assen for the GP, needless to say he didn't make it!

I apply rule 1 :
Read the manual before I start. Read it again step by step as the work progresses.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

Porter.....I've never actually ridden the bike with no spacer, always found it when I'm going through the bits I've got left over after a job.

Brocket.....I apply a slightly different approach,
Only read the manual as a last resort, do every job at least twice because I never read the manual. :smirk:

Understood. So basically I have wasted money on the bearings extractors...

I've used my bearing extractor set for more than just bearings, and have removed ones with spacers quite happily on multiple bikes, so maybe you are needing a bit practice?

SKF Bearing installation and maintenance guide.
Overkill for most I suspect but even if you only do a bit of spannering the first few pages are still worth a look IMHO.
Free pdf download from SKF here.
