Engine flush to clean the oil level window
« on: November 19, 2020, 21:19:32 »
Hello. I can barely see oil level on my oil window. There is a lot of sludge on it. Oil is changed regulary however I don't know how it was before I purchased the bike. I want to clean the window but without of hassle to disassembly clutch cover / new gasket etc.

I am just before oil and filter change, so I thought I might do it.

Will it work?

Is it white sludge? If so, it's just the cold air. Usually goes away after a good ride - mine only cleared after a 2hr motorway rode last time (it might help to loosen the oil cap post ride too)

Ah. I thought it might be condensation in the oil which turns the sight glass a slightly white/misty colour, which is normal in cold weather & changing the oil wouldn't solve it.

From a discussion on the StromTrooper site, https://www.stromtrooper.com/threads/clean-oil-sight-glass.431005/, there are a few pix in posts #8 before cleaning and #21 after cleaning.  Bottom line, was to remove the casing, to clean the oil sight glass.

A bit of a dig but I finally made decision to remove clutch cover and clean the glass. Is the metal plate covering the glass removable??

I have this issue every time the temperature drops below 8/9 °C.
I do a 35 ish mile each way mostly A road commute and this issue has become the norm in the colder months. My local engineers advice was to ignore it as the oil is okay, his method to clear the sight glass by heating with a hairdryer. Needless to say as soon as I'm out in the cold the condensation returns! A good long run in warmer weather gets the engine warm enough to clear the condensation, I had the same issue with my SV650s.

In my case it is not condensation, it is thin film of oil on the glass which hardened and there to stay...

I can't see what you've got to lose, give it a whirl.
I think Motul do a decent one. You'll probably get it for a tadge over a tenner if you have a good search.
