Insurance for 3 month European Trip
« on: October 07, 2020, 16:48:25 »
Hi all,
Wasn't quite sure where to post this, apologies if this is not the best area.
Issue
I am planning a 3 month european trip. Spoke to my insurer today, who said "you are covered for europe, for 90 days in the year, but there is a limit of 30 days at a time". I asked if I could get some sort of addition from themselves that would change this but they could not do this, quite adamant that with themselves, 30 days is the limit.

So my only option seems to be change insurers. My questions are

I) anyone know of any smart way round this 30 day limit with my current insurer (Lexham)
ii) Can I get some sort of 'top up' from any other insurer that would insure me in europe for 3 months consecutively, whilst still keeping my current insurance
iii) Are there insurers who have a longer period than 30 days (presumably so, as bikers go on long tours abroad all the time), and who are they?
I've) Any other inventive ideas

Many thanks in advance for advice, ideas

Michael
PS have thought of flying home for a day, leaving my bike in europe, every 30 days? Would this reset the clock? Or do I need to take my bike back with me? I'd rather not do this as a solution but it might be a possibility.

I'm currently with Carole Nash who also offer 90 days abroad and I think you can go for the whole period.
They don't need Informing when you go either and I've never heard them say to me you can only go 30 days per trip.

Also with Carole Nash and just checked my policy wording.
Nothing about single trip limit for the 90days EU coverage, their included breakdown and roadside is also EU and they seem to be one of the few that still do that (maybe none will after Jan so glad I just renewed).
They were also super quick to sort a recent BooBoo I may have had  :shy:

Fingers crossed but upon my renewal some weeks ago I asked about the UK leaving the EU and was told they have no plans to change.

Let's see ...  :eusa-doh:

Thanks so far blokes n girls
Carole Nash is out of the question for me as they give some ridiculous quote of £3k as I'm a new rider based in London. I could get insured by MCE though with quite a high excess, but it appears they do 6 months of EU cover with no restrictions on how you can take that.

Bikesure offer Free European Cover. Try giving Adrian Flux a ring to get a quote to suit your needs.

Was about to say Adrian Flux as I use them for my car. Flux Rescue is also a pretty competitive breakdown cover option if it applies to their bike cover as well.

I just moved the old bikes from Carole Nash over to RH Insurance: they took the renewal price down from £250 to £84 for pretty much the same cover. The wording on that policy regarding European travel is 'There is no limit on the number of trips you make in any period of insurance but each trip must be for no more than 90 days'. Basically, as long as I still have a permanent UK residence & pop back ever so often, I can pretty much live over there.
Hastings, who cover the KTM, say 90 consecutive days. Interestingly, they also say that if your trip goes beyond 90 days without agreeing with them in advance, you're still covered to the minimum legally required in the country you're in.

We did a 2 month trip around Europe in 2012 with Carole Nash and I don't remember any issues. Don't deal with them now due to stupid quotes.
