Valve Shims, OEM not available
« on: November 15, 2022, 12:02:11 »
Further to my valve clearance check at the weekend, I find myself in need of 8 valve shims, 4 x 2.75mm and 4 x 2.95mm.
Fowlers helpfully inform me that Suzuki no longer supply the 2.95mm size and have not issued a replacement which I find astonishing given the number of models the old thou motor was bolted in to, I would frankly suspect the DL1050 uses the same shims but apparently 2.95mm is a no go.
I can see Wemoto listing shims but they state 9.5mm OD and most Suzuki OEM parts are listed as 9.48mm OD. Anyone have any experience on this as to whether or not the OD is a nominal 9.5 or anyone actually used Wemoto for aftermarket shims since Suzuki don't seem to think it's important to supply in 0.05mm increments any more.

Have you tried Robinsons, they have them listed on their site to order.
Doesn't mean they'll get them of course but worth a call?

Edit,
had nothing else to do so so went on live chat.........here's a screen print of the conversation.

Cheers Mick

Yep, seems everyone is telling me that Suzuki don't supply them any more, don't know if it's all the 0.05 increments or just the 2.95 but no go apparently.
I've ordered some JMP shims which a few of the major sites seem to stock, they even go down to 0.025mm increments, like my feeler guage skills are that good :)
With the money I saved vs OEM, I'll treat her to a new brake light and clutch switch since they've both played up a bit recently.

Interesting, Fowlers said the UK supplier showed stock but then told them they didn't have them and couldn't get any more.
God knows, oh well, it can't be a hard part to get an accurate pattern of I'd hope :)

Way back in the 80s Suzuki stopped supplying their larger shims for the four and two cylinder bikes. I had a GS425 at the time. Apparently the official line was if you need a shim that big then you need a new cylinder head. In engineering terms it was tosh of course and not very clever marketing either. I still have a shim tool from then and one or two large shims  :)

Try Grumpy 1260 (Google 'em), they might have some.
Could you swap a few around to get to the correct clearances?
A Suzuki tech said to me when I did all eight on mine, set them at the larger end of the tolerance figures.

Can't swap them sadly as all intakes have 2.80s and all exhaust have 3.00s (rounding to closest 0.05 increments). I've ordered some JMP ones and I'll go 0.05 down on all 8 which will put 6 bang on middle and the other 2 slightly over middle. I'll see where I am in another 15k and maybe aim for the upper limit next time if any need changing.

Cheers Hessy.
The JMP ones are listed as 9.5 but they measure up exactly 9.48 as do the oem ones so I think I'm good to go, when I get the time.

No problem, I'm doing t he shims on a friends ZZR1100 and kawasaki state the shims are 7.5 in diameter and my v strom ones were 7.48 so I hesitated to use mine even though the difference was very close. after a lot of searching I found a company called "Bikeaholics' who have a fantastic stock of shims as well as other parts for all bikes
