Taking part in the Eroica ride, on the decent into Tideswell, Brian goes past me shouting “ get a move on lad” .. I was 57 .. at the bottom of the hill we chatted and pulled up at the church where he dispatched me to get him a bacon roll as he moved other riders aside on the church wall for us to sit. We chatted for about 20 minutes before setting off again. As we climbed the shallow ascent out of Tideswell he shouted goodbye and went off route back to Bakewell.
I didn’t know who he was !
Even as a competitive cyclist of 35 years.
Two blokes behind me caught up and told me the tale.
What a lovely man ....

His son is my age, we were at school together. Brian was back running the joinery business at that time. Much later I was Brian's postman for 4 years, he was a very likeable and modest man.
