dl1050 15k service
« on: September 30, 2022, 17:55:15 »
Have sent out some emails for quotes for my 2021 dl1050 15 k service

1st quote back is £950 !!!! ouch

Just wondering how often valve clearances actually needed to be adjusted at 15k ?

Also seems crazy to change spark plugs (iridium)@ 15k?

Would value your thoughts?

Cheers Steve

Exactly there's no way I'm paying that

Hopefully other quotes will be a lot cheaper

Otherwise think I will chance the valve clearances and DIY the rest , plugs and ait filters can be changed at 22500 service

Cheers Steve

A bit pricey in my eyes! The valves may not need adjusting but IMHO they do need checking! Has the dealer given you a quote that includes the extra couple of hours plus to adjust them? If they are in spec you should/could be looking at £2/300 less but still pricey!!
If they are iridium spark plugs they should be good 'till the next service.

Back in 2017 I was quoted £520 for the 15k service and extra on top if the shims changed. I did it myself, it's one of the easier bikes on the market to work at. I needed no shims at 15k but had two tight exhaust clearances at 30k and all others on minimum.
If I'm going to the trouble of taking the bike apart to check the valves I'll put new plugs and air filter while in there. Don't buy the plugs from a dealer, they're like 25 quid each, do a search for a better price. Think my last set was from sparkplugsdirect at a tenner each. There's only the one plug type for this model.

Perhaps kwackboy can tell us where this extreme cost comes from. No, I'm not blaming you at all, just a hands on idea of labouur, parts etc.

I can understand if you've a mountain of effort to achieve the job but most activities are normal or similar. Most 'garages' know the bike they're about to operate on, Suzuki must know their own engines and procedures surely.

Your views please sir.........  :)
So how's it going so far then?

Quote number 2 both from Suzuki dealers

£570 big difference

I asked about cost if no adjustments needed , told same price whether needs adjusting or not

I asked about price differences I was getting and was told it was just the different labour rates. as Suzuki will have set labour time but not rates

As said, it's down to different labour rates due to places having less staff and overheads to cover.
The first quote of £950 is a piss take,  maybe they over quoted because they didn't want to do the job, some garages do this.

I'm not sure how many hours Suzuki quote for such a job but I would have thought around 4 hours + parts

The set figure of £570 if it needs shims or not sounds good.
If you go with them,  I would ask for the measurements of the gaps and what shims were charged (if any) for future reference.

Every time I do shims, which is rare these days , I take photos of the Bike apart and show the customer plus, on their bill, the gaps and what shims were changed.

Another quote prices going down which is good

Frasers of Gloucester :-

Your motorcycle at 15k is due a Major Service which is £390 plus vat (£468)

This will involve :-

Oil & Filter
Clean Air Filter
Coolant Changed
Brake Fluids Changed
Clean and Lube Brakes
Tyre Pressures
Electrics Check
Plugs Changed
General Check of Nuts and Bolts
Valve Clearance
Balance Throttle Bodies.

Awaiting reply to see if there is an extra charge if valves need adjusting

Not sure if the coolant needs changing  , bike was registered new in April 2021 , but did buy till August 2021 and will have done 15k in the 15 months since I had it , super long life coolant is every 2 years or 15000 miles or does it come with super long life coolant which is every 4 years ?

Same question regarding the clutch fluid / brake fluid which is every 2 years ?

The above quote includes brake fluid and coolant but not clutch fluid ?

Would welcome your thoughts

Cheers Steve

I would imagine they would do clutch fluid if they were doing brake fluid, they possibly don't list it because not all bikes have hydro clutches.
Coolant wise, depending on the dealers preference I guess they might whip the rad off to access the front cylinder for valve clearances and so it makes sense to use the strip down window to swap the coolant regardless of its age.

To get to the valves on the front cylinder you need to remove the radiator so change the coolant while there. I'd do everything while I was in there, coolant, spark plugs, air filter and throttle body balance so I don't have to look again for another 15k. To me anything else is a half service. Clutch fuild is very easy to change.

Whilst having my 7500 service done at York Suzuki earlier in the year I asked the price of the 15k service. Price quoted was £380 plus extra if the shims need any work. He said it would be doubtful they would need any adjustment at 15k

While for me as an amateur it would make a big difference if I need to change shims or not, I imagine for a shop doing it every day and having all the shims ready it makes very little difference. As I understand, in case of the 1037 motor, you don't have to fiddle with the chain or anything so it's like additional 20 minutes of wrenching. If you quoted differently for shims vs no shims, you'd have to slice it further - potentially you will need to unbolt either 1, 2, 3 or 4 camshafts. All this quoting and calculating may be more work than just changing a shim or two.

Needed new front & rear pads and price all in was £500 including garage supplying pads EBC HH's
Got photos of bike apart with valve clearances all in middle of range so no need to shim
6.5 hrs labour approx £250
Parts approx £250 , Iridium spark plugs flippen expensive

Happy that's its sorted
