Vee clutch slave cylinder outer/extra seal
« on: August 07, 2022, 21:40:06 »
Hello all, does anyone know the part number of the extra outer seal that can be added to early (K3) Vee clutch slave cylinders to help prevent leaks?

My slave cylinder started leaking in France so I picked up a whole new genuine Suzuki cylinder (which surprisingly was a lot cheaper there than UK) but it doesn't come with the extra seal, so I figured I would add one now anyway.

An online parts diagram suggests 23166-02F20 for K2-K3 and 23166-06G00 for K5-K6, which is a bit odd as the cylinder itself didn't change over those years and I thought the earlier one didn't have such a seal.

Even odder, I bought a Tourmax seal kit to refurb the old one & carry as a spare, and that has an outer seal in it which is 2mm smaller diameter than the cylinder bore.

The outer seal is a dust cover, which helps protect the cylinder. It's the item on the left of the picture, mine had disintegrated and probably caused my slave cylinder to leak.

Yes that's the one, though the one in the pattern kit is too small for the bore so won't seal anything, and Suzuki have 2 different part numbers to choose between

Thanks, I learnt something new about the slave cylinder dust cover that I never knew before.
Digging deeper, I compared the part numbers on a US parts site for the Vee dust cover.
The part number appears to have remained constant for the K2 - K6 models. However from K7 - K9 it appears that the part number changed.  Then in 2012 / L2 the part number changed again.
My point of reference is https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/Suzuki/motorcycle/2006/v-strom-DL1000/clutch  (part #27A) vs https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/Suzuki/motorcycle/2007/v-strom-DL1000/clutch (part #28).   From the parts list it appears that there were no further DL1000 models imported to the US until 2012 or L2.
In 2012, the dust cover received a new part name and part number, namely Bleeder Cap with a part number 59122-01A00. My reference https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/Suzuki/motorcycle/2012/dl1000l2/clutch (part #28)

@TimV from the results turned up in my cross referencing, it appears that you may have received the incorrect part.  You don't perhaps have the old packaging?

That's interesting- the US catalogue is a little different to the UK one https://www.suzukiparts.co.uk/shop/online-store/Suzuki-parts-finder/dl-v-strom/DL1000/k2-k6-2002-2006.htm#!dl1000k2clutch
it has the same two part numbers , but they are shown as for 2002-2006 and 2007-2009, while the UK one has them for 2002-2004 and 2005-2006.

I haven't bought either yet, I was trying to decide which one to order

I see what you mean. I had a look at the part numbers listed on Flowersparts and they have the same info as in your post.
https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/5922571/dl-1000-v-strom/clutch  (25A   COVER, DUST   23166-02F20    MODEL K2/K3/K4)
https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/5922833/dl-1000-v-strom/clutch (25B   COVER, DUST   23166-06G00   Model K5)

Bottom line since you have a K3 Vee, I would order the dust cover for that model.
I haven't yet read of anyone using a K5 clutch slave unit as a replacement on a K3, but not sure what the dust seal size difference is.

Looking at the info on https://www.fowlersparts.co.uk/parts/5922571/dl-1000-v-strom/clutch  (K3 listing), it looks like the parts list may be mixed up, since the complete slave cylinder is part #23  CYLINDER CLUTCH DL1000/K4-    2316006G20   Does not include dust cover - parts diagram wrong  Replaces 23160-06G02   Does not include Dust Cover as shown in diagram - purchase separately.  Then looking at the listing under K5 again the complete slave cylinder, the details are exactly the same aka part #23  CYLINDER CLUTCH DL1000/K4-    2316006G20   Does not include dust cover - parts diagram wrong  Replaces 23160-06G02   Does not include Dust Cover as shown in diagram - purchase separately.
Certainly confusing.
