Phone holder
« on: July 19, 2022, 14:05:18 »
Hi all

I have a phone holder on my bike handle bars which I’m happy with for day to day use, however I’m looking for one I can clip on my screen and put above my clocks so that it more visible when using Sat Nav and touring, I can’t seem to find anything decent that will put it at a good height, just wondered if you blokes had any ideas? My screen is too curved to take a suction type one

Thanks

I would recommend Quad Lock, their stuff is brilliant and top quality. It is expensive mind, but worth it! They do all sort of fixings, from handlebar (22mm) to mirror mounts (12mm like the handlebar cross brace), or adhesive mounts as I have used. I did put some self tapping screws in as well to be 100% secure, not everyones taste but it positions my phone in perfect view for Sat-Nav etc while riding.

Depending on the generation of your 650, Cosmo make a heads up bracket which would likely take your existing phone holder.

Anything that attached to the screen itself would likely vibrate a lot and make your screen very tricky to read on the move.

The Quad Lock does look the business. I believe they also waterproof covers for most phone models? Handy if you ride / tour and it rains.
I have the Ultimateaddons phone case and a bar mount on the GPS bar over the clocks. I also installed their hardwired charging cable too. Works fine for me.

If using Quadlock, get the damper attachment too based on recent feedback on here, or it may knacker your phone's camera.

Damper is only needed if the phone have optical stabilisation, but good idea to have I anyway :)

Definitely buy the additional stabiliser, even if it’s not to protect the camera it keeps the phone stable so can be easily read even on bumpy roads  :)

Quadlock for me has been great, I have an iPhone and bought the following -

Handlebar Mount Pro
Poncho
Dampener

Only thing I have now considered to get and add is the wireless charging option which truth be told I don't really need but I have found with the Optimate USB adapter that it can vibrate itself out of the socket enough to not charge and needs pushed back in ever so slightly.

Several friends have the Quadlock with damper and wireless charger, all say they're excellent and quickly stop moaning about the price once they've used them for a few weeks and realise you get what you pay for.
As for the bar mounts that use the windscreen bolts to attach, on the Gen 1 you will have to run the screen in the upper position, also I found my mount vibrated a bit on rough roads so I put two large stainless penny washers under the bolt heads and that toughened it up a fair bit.

Just something brought to my attention whilst we were in France recently. Using a phone as a Sat Nav uses data, and as we are no longer in the EC data roaming (depending on your supplier) costs money. For us this was an extra £15 for only occasional use over a week.

Indeed it does (not for me thankfully). A lot of providers charge a day rate for Roaming so minimal use represents the worst value, as they fully well know.
* Even if you use a proper Sat Nav unit, it's worth checking if it uses your mobile data to get things like live traffic.

You can download an offline map of the you are riding to save data. Won't get live traffic updates through.

Do you know if they do a bar that goes across the clocks for the 2014 V Strom 650?

Unless I'm misunderstanding your question, it's the middle one of the 3 I linked to earlier, the models and dates fitted are in the URLs.

* If you pop the year/model code of your bike in your signature then people will know which model you are asking about in future ;)

I bought a quad lock earlier this year. Much better than the Oxford mount. Alas, on a trip in May my iPhone's camera gave up the ghost because I was too tight to buy the vibration dampener.

The camera is in a diaphragm and it doesn't like vibration.

So, I recently bought the vibration dampener AND another iPhone - and the week before last I did a week in the Highlands of Scotland and over 1k miles with my phone on the mount - and the phone is fine so I can definitely say that the vibration dampener works and its well worth the money they ask.

When you first fit the dampener, you think 'how will that work' as the rubber seems fairly rigid. But it does work because my phone is still fine.

this was the final result that I've ended up with, bought this as mount bracket, I've put a cross piece between the 2 screen screws and now the phone mount sits above the clocks where I wanted it, really happy, ill put a picture up of it on the bike tomorrow when I get the bike out, but really happy

thanks for all your help

I've been using an ultimate addons mount/case for my phone since 2017.
Had a case for my S7 that is now used by my 2yr old as the case makes it easy to clean and dropping it doesn't matter much.

I now use an S10 with their case - my only gripe is that the S7 had big squashy buttons on the case, where the case for the S10 these were omitted and it's a pita to adjust the volume.

I used to leave the phone in the case and connect it to my Bluetooth speaker while camping but adjusting the volume means I had to install a volume button app and have to close the player window to get to it!

some of the other case do have the buttons!   :icon_batterup:

I have a Palmer Products adjustable screen mount that has the 22mm bar running along the top to mount the ram ball clamp to.
