Crash bars
« on: March 04, 2022, 17:20:10 »
Hi
I hope I've posted this in the right place.
I'm after advice on crash bars for my 2012 DL650.
Are there any makes to avoid or anything to watch out for?
Thanks in advance

I had the Givi ones for my round the world trip and they saved my bodywork more than once. I’ve now gone for the expensive R&G aero protectors that look to do the same in a more elegant solution.

On my 2012 GSR 750  the R&G crash bung was the first thing to break off when we hit the road at 60mph.  :icon_crutch: Those nice looking engine case covers don't save anything else.
I saw a newish Hyabusa go down in a petrol station ( diesel on the floor) when almost stopped. The side of the bike was trashed.
I like to fit SW-Motech engine bars hoping, that they will save the bike from severe damage if it falls over.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

I have the OEM ones but they're marketed as 'accessory bars' rather than crash bars. I've not tested them in a drop.
Heed, Givi, SW Motech all get good reviews. Not sure if Cosmo do crashbars but they do other accessories that are decent quality too.

Thank you for the replies.
I've seen some by a company called PUIG.... does anyone have any experience of these?
They are cheaper than most.... I suspect that's for a reason :-)

Cheers

I had Puig on my K6, good strong bars, saved any damage in a couple of stationary topples plus 1 low speed off.

Interesting. Following my coming together with car turning left across my path, I thought that the only injuries to the bike were paint on the RH crash bar.
Now sufficiently recovering from some cracked ribs (courtesy of a wing mirror) I see that the bar is now closer to the bike than it used to be! Not sure of the make, although they are fairly ugly, so I need to replace them.
Having trolled through the t'internet, I narrowed the choice down to the Givi TN3101 (very similar to those fitted), and the Puig M5884N due to pricing. I'm not a fan of paying extortionate prices for a mass produced piece of bent and painted 25mm tube! They all use the same mounting points and all are designed to save bending/scratching the bodywork in a tumble or coming together with an idiot.
So. Found a set of Puig at Busters for £97 free delivery. It will be interesting to see how these fit...

Ay up Champ.
I'd be interested in knowing how they work out/look etc.
I do like the look of the Givi's and they seem well made. Puig is certainly a decent make though.
I look forward to your review.

I have OEM bars fitted. My bike blew off it's side stand in a very strong wind and there wasn't a mark on the bike or crash bars. When a young lady knocked on my door at 6:30am and told me my bike had fallen over I strait away expected a repair bill of hundreds of pounds yet, not even a mark.

OK. I'll try again!  :GRR:
Puig crash bars arrived quickly although packaging left a little to be desired!
Removal of fitted bars was very easy, although I had to clear out the threads using an M8 tap due to previous fitter having used copious amounts of thread lock!
Kept the bolts finger tight on both sides until the centre fixings were lined up and ready to tighten.
Can't remember if the torque setting was one or one and a half grunts. Placed the new plastic covers on the bolt heads and that was it! Took less than an hour to remove and replace both sides.  :fix:
Tools needed: H6 and H5 socket hex heads and a sharp knife to ease off the old plastic caps.
Sent another hour or so refitting the aux lights and front camera, and obviously had to test ride it...  :auto-dirtbike:
Will try again to upload pics...  :bow-blue:

Nope. Didn't work again... Message:  Your attachment has failed security checks and cannot be uploaded. Please consult the forum administrator.. How do I contact the Forum Administrator???

Champ,
I don't know if it'll help, I am an IT idiot afterall.
Come to think about it.......
I download the photos to the device and then upload from the downloads. It doesn't work otherwise.
Good luck fella, if that doesn't work find someone under 8. They'll know how to do it.

Champy your photo file size might be too large. The forum does resize them but can't do it if the file is too large.
Try to reduce it in size and try again.
I use this  https://www.faststone.org/FSResizerDetail.htm on my PC but other programmes or apps will be available for your phone, I presume.

Yeah, I do download the pictures to my Mac and then unzip.
Oh, and the picture size (each) is 414kb... Guess that will be the issue!!

Thanks

Right. Herewith another attempt!

BTW. Tested new crash bars today at varying speeds. They didn't fall off.
BTW2. Bloody C45 keeps occurring and then disappearing on a cold start, or on dealer mode...

Champ,
They look a good sturdy bar. Good tube thickness by the look of it.
Good news they don't dissolve at all road speeds.
