Malfunction light plus F1 - any quick fixes?
« on: April 18, 2022, 11:20:54 »
Help!! My '17 DL650 has sprung an issue. The malfunction light is on and F1 indicator alternates with the trip odometer. According to the manual it indicates a fuel injection issue. The bike starts and seems to run normally. Its always been fine before and had been in the garage for about two weeks before starting up. Any thoughts on likely culprits or quick fixes worth trying before I resort to a trip to my dealer? Presumably the bike's OK to ride to the dealer (about an hour away?).

The FI light shows there's a fault but it needs to go into 'dealer mode' to find what the fault code is, this should help .................

A quick update, in case it's of interest to anyone else with a similar issue.....
I spoke to my local dealer and booked the bike in for a diagnostic check. Meanwhile, I charged the battery with my Optimate charger as the bike had been stood for a couple of weeks. When I turned on the ignition later.....fault lights gone! I spoke to the dealer again (to cancel the service appointment), who said that it's likely that low battery voltage had caused the malfunction light to come on, even though the bike had started OK.... "We have the same issue with bikes in the showroom sometimes!"
Hopefully the 'issue' was nothing but an elderly battery in need of rejuvenation.

Good to hear that it's OK now.
Did you put it into 'dealer mode' to read the fault code before you charged the battery & it cleared?
Would be interesting to know what code it was.

No, I didn't attempt to do that...I did have a look at the link you gave but lacked the confidence to mess with electrical stuff! If it comes back on, it'll go up to Damerells for a diagnosis, but from what they said on the phone, it all points to an ageing battery (I think it's still on its 2017 original battery). I'll keep it charged up and hope for the best for a while.

@ Tigerjohn, did you disconnect your battery terminals to place it on charge?  Did you check the voltage before the recharge?

No, I just connected Optimate leads to the terminals. I didn't check voltage (my old Optimate doesn't extend to that...I did buy an Oxford Oximiser but it fell apart on first use so it went back!).

Disconnect your charger, then turn on the ignition but don't start the motor. If left with the ignition switch in the on position for roughly 60 - 90 seconds, this will place a load on the battery. Take voltage readings before placing a load on the battery and again after turning the ignition on with the waiting period. What are the voltage readings that you measured?

I'll need to beg/borrow a voltage meter to do this....I'll report back when done!

Is there not a voltage reading on the dash?
